I don't know what came over me....
« on: March 04, 2008, 11:50:04 AM »
So, the 3-day waiting period is over, and I drove over to my local gun shop at lunch today, to pick up my new Browning Buck Mark .22 SA, and as I go to take possession, one of the counter guys says "Hey, I know you've been looking for a nice used S&W 686 .357... guess what just got put in the display case an hour ago!"

Darn... now I have another 3-day waiting period, and - since it was on consignment - I also have to come in with a bundle of cash (no credit cards) at the end of the week.  I've got to stop going over there at lunch time.

Next, I need to figure what to tell the wife. I'm usually a proponent of "Better to ask for forgiveness, than ask for permission" but two purchases in less than a week is sort of pushing it!

The new addition to the family is a S&W 686, 4" stainless steel barrel, six shot. Been fired a bit, but looks to be in nice shape. Will need a nice clean & buff job!

Any one know if there is a way to determine the manufacturing date for this revolver from the serial number? I know how to do that for my Browning handguns, but I didn't see anything on this topic at the S&W website (except, S&W will provide your gun's history, for a $30 fee!).

Well, I've broken the news to my spouse, and explained that I've been watching for a nice, used revolver (she is more comfortable with revolvers than semi-autos), and that I came across this 686 in really great shape, for a really great price, half of what a new 686 would run.

She basically said if I thought it was good deal to go ahead... good thing, too... 'cause it came home today after the 72-hour waiting period.

I really lucked out, this gun is in great shape, solid at the cylinder with just the teeniest play, good cylinder gap, no forward/back motion, forcing cones seem very sharp and distinct, barrel is super clean and the grooves seem real sharp. Hardly any wear on the rear sight, so probably not a daily duty gun.  With two speed loaders and case (no owner's manual and no key for the internal lock) was $345, plus tax and $5 ID check fee.

If any S&W 686 owners have recommendations for favorite practice ammo (both .38 Special and .357), or any ammo to avoid, I'm all ears!

The 4" 686 is a very fine revolver. Sounds like you got a very good buy. If you want light, easy shooting practice range rounds and don't reload, the CCI Blazer I find the CCI Blazer 158 grain JHP a decent way to go, as you can practice with a bullet weight that makes a decent self defense round, Speer 158 grain Gold Dot Hollow Point. The jacketed bullet keeps from lead fouling the barrel I find.

Nice purchase ... enjoy shooting it ... it is one of my favorite handguns.
