So what do you guys think about savage firearms? as far as quality,accuracy, and reliability. I really cant go with a remington now since they dont include the two calibers i wanted the .308 and the .300wm in left-hand. It looks like the savage is next in like because i would still like the availability to customize if wanting too.

just looking for some feed back from people who have shot them and still shoot them.

Accuracy - Savage rifles have a well-deserved reputation for great out-of-the-box accuracy.

Reliability - I would place them above at least one of the more expensive brands in this regard and equal to the others.

Quality - Depends on how you define it. I consider accuracy and reliability to be much more important than cosmetics. The Savage are excellent rifles in this regard. If superficial cosmetics are what you want, another brand might be a better choice.

Value - I think you'd be hard pressed to get more value for your money.

Had a Savage 110E in .22-250 a number of years back. Sold it when the barrel finally gave out after 4,000 plus rounds. Just bought another one for my future son-in-law, this one in .30-06, as a wedding present. Guess that says all I need to say regarding what I think of Savage rifles.

I have a Savage 10FP in .223 that I put a B&C stock on. I have a 4200 Bushnell Elite scope on it. It is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

If you want to customize without paying for your gunsmith's next Buick the the SAVAGE is the rifle for you.

Everything from barrels to bolt knobs, recoil lugs to bolt faces can be changed out on your kitchen table. All you need are a couple of special wrenches and a little mechanical aptitude.

I concur w/ C-Hunter. Mine are all configured at the factory but I've had nothing but success in all four of the rifles I own from Savage in all 3 areas you noted. The barrel nut is oft criticized on cosmetics but if you want to change calibers (w/in reason) you can also do this by a simple barrel change.

thanks guys! looks like the riffle will most likely be a savage then.

How do you guys feel about the standard barrel compared to a bull barrel in most hunting situations? where im at its alot of woods and we do some pushing but not all that much. Alot more time in the stand then anything. Im just wondering if the extra wieght would really effect me all that much.

The savage rifles I've owned were all heavy barreled.

My father in law has a weather warrior 30-06, and my cousin has a stainless package gun in 30-06. I've shot both of those guns and they are great. They'll shoot good groups depending on the ammo. Both of those guns have been on bear hunts and I'd trust them with my life.

As far as heavy barreled vs standard barrels seems to me like heavier barrels are less picky about ammo, but standard barrels shoot just as well until they heat up.

You can't go wrong with a Savage. You have a better chance of winning the lotto than you do of finding a savage that doesn't shoot 1" groups or less.

For one shot I'd have the sporter barrel. The bull barrels are just too heavy the swing or handle well. I think the bull barrel is more usefull for varmint and bench shooting where you do allot of shooting in one sitting. My son was in a nice long shot stand two years ago when a big 8 point came running past the stand. He just couldn't get that gun around.

This year he'll take his 280 pump. He's a south paw also and had a custom Rem 700 with a Shilen barrel, Choate stock and chambered in '06.
As for Savage I think they're 2 am bar queens, fat and ugly but total functional and hard to beat

His shooting partner has a heavy barrel 308 and after he put on the Choate stock will give Jake a run for his money and less than half what he did

Bull barrels are great on varmint rifles but as a rule are not something I care to carry around all day. All of my big game rifles have sporter barrels.

You mention in another thread that elk and moose are on the menu. If you go after elk you will really appreciate the lighter sporter barrel.

I have or have owned rifle built on about every commercial action and alot of military actions, and they all work, some better than others. As Krochus said they make and excellent choice for custom guns as you can rebarrel them yourself. I personally am looking for some that are pretty beat up that I can buy cheap and rebarrel. If you get a new one with the accura-trigger you`ll have the next thing to a bench trigger.

Go to the library, gun shop or book store and check out a "2008 Gun Digest". I was pondering your questions last night and looked in the "Shooters Guide". Rem has a left handed 700 XCR in 270, 06, 7 mag, and 300 Rem Ultra Mag. The "Gun Digest will also lit every other manufactures left handed guns. Though I'm a Savage fan I'm firm believer in diversity. Ruger, Rem., Win<

Excuse me please but I'll still disagree with your friend, The BLR is still a good choice. It comes in a verity of calibers and has a locking bolt like a bolt action rifle. It's accurate handles well and provides a quick second shot. As a person's main hunting weapon a BLR (or Savage 99) in the right cartridge and 2x7 or 2.5x8 scope it's hard to beat. The only down side I see is that it will eject to the right which may be distracting. Have You considered an T/C Encore?

I have 5 Savage/Stevens rifles and all are sub moa shooters. Two of them are Stevens 200 that i bought to make a 250/3000 and a 257 Roberts. The 250/3000 was made from a 22-250 action and a 25/06 take-off barrel. The Roberts is a re-chambered 25/06. The other 3 are a 110fp in 25/06;
12fv in 22-250; and a 10 "Sierra" in 308. I could go on for hours about accuracy and reliability but i won't bore you more.

savages....let me say that i had a 300 win mag 110e and i could have stuck the barrel in my mouth, pulled the trigger with my toe, and still missed. what a p.o.s.. savage said the gun was "with factory specs for accuracy. (8" groups at 50 yards). that was my first and last savage.

Well lets see 2 negative for Savage and 14 no 15 positive..I love mine and shoot 3/4" at 100 yds. Great rifles.

Well, I don't own a Savage bolt. Got me 2 M-99's though!

Anyway, I guess the only reason I don't is that one in the right caliber at the right price never done showed up. 'course I never considered them in the same class as a M-70 or 700. Then again I felt the same way about a Ruger M-77. Shows you how much I know. I had to refigger my position though. I was at my gun club one day when I strolled by a bench rest shooter practicin. Now, if you know the boys that get into this game, you know they the biggest bunch of anal retentive folk this side of California. They got gages that measure everything they is to measure then they calculate all that stuff and load the rounds they gonna shoot right there at the bench! Well, this feller proudly showed me his rifle-gun, wouldn't let me touch it though, had it made special and I'll bet it cost more'n my wife's new car... and she likes them fancy foreign jobs. Think it was in some chambering like 30/338 Lapua or sumpin like that. Guess what action it was built on? Yup, Savage.

If your Savage was that bad you should have sent it back..if you were the original owner. If not, who knows what happened to it before you got it ?

As said in some of the posts, Savages are handy for the home gunsmith, perhaps someone before you blew the headspace, dinged the crown or left the locking ring a bit loose or whatever...

it was straight from the factory, and it did go back. they got the exact same results as me, and called it good. it isnt that a turd came to me and i got upset, it was more that savage didnt lift a finger to address it that soured me to them.

i never claimed to be a remington fan, fact is i dont like them either. they screwed my dad really good with the 742, and i am on record here having discussed that. i wont buy a remington either. how you got the impression i was a green kool aid drinker is beyond me. that simply isnt so.
i chose a ruger m77, and have had some custom work done to it, as nice a bolt gun as one could hope to own. it is a great design, admittly a tad rough around the edges from the factory, but easily addressed by a good smith for not much money. maybe not a one hole rifle, but i havent been outshot with it yet. 2 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards works for me.
the only thing i am saying here is that if you get a bad rifle from savage, you are screwed. y'all do what you want with your money, but like i said, i dont like to gamble.

Myronman: Last year I bought a new Savage Stevens 411 SxS shotgun. The ejectors worked, but didn't work exactly right. If I shot the left barrel first and opened the gun both unfired and fired shells ejected. Worked okay if I shot the right barrel first. I called Savage. They paid for shipping both ways. After examining the gun they sent me a new one. So I like Savage. Sorry for your problems.

you know, if i had gotten anywhere near as positive a response as you did, my outlook on them would be totally different. but back in 94 they outright said "tough $#!*" to me and the rest is history.
