Where I hunt, it's just not deer that I may encounter, so I want a bullet that will penetrate from breastbone to arse if need be.
Here is a test I recently did using a 290-gr SWC non-gas check
Range ReportFirearm: Ruger SBH SS 4 5/8ths .44 Magnum
Test Load: 290-gr SWC Keith Style, 16.5 gr of 2400, Fed 155 LMPP
Test Distance To Target: 20 feet
Test Material: 12" wide x 18" tall x 12" deep (5) 5 gallon jugs of water with 1/2" CBM plywood between Jug #1 and #2 - Jugs #2 - #4 just water, then between #4 and #5 another sheet of plywood.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yCfI7fquGyYThe outcome was that I had
4' of penetration up to the 2nd sheet of 1/2" CBM plywood, as the bullet struck the wood sideways, and bounced which I recovered. The over all shape of the bullet was un-deformed other than rifling marks from the barrel.
I will be conducting further test on this with a little bit hotter load, using H110 powder, CCI #300 LPP and the 305-gr WFN GC supplied from Rim Rock Bullets.
I know have a Chrony F1 so I can check all my FPS on my data as well.
I practice for meeting what I don't want to meet in the woods.
