i have english setters and i prefer the females. the females seem to mature faster and have a longer attention span. besides i hate that my male insists on hiking his leg on everything. i'm not a professional by any means just my observation over the years.

Over the long haul with Airedales, Beagles and Coonhounds I have had a pretty much even split between males and females as far as hunting ability so I would not say one is better than the other. The one thing about females is they come in heat a couple of times a year and one of those heats usually will fall during hunting season.

I would prefer a female.  Aside from the leg lifting and the fighting I just think they are better family dogs and don't roam as much.  Think about how you behaved when you were a teen.  My personal best hunters have been females, a Wirehair and a Brittany.
I always get them spayed so coming in heat is not a problem, and my Vet says it will extend their life.

I am only 18 so I don't have much experience but my personal preference is males. I have only had male hunting dogs but my little brother has a female golden retriever mix. I think that determination and the dogs willingness to please you is the largest factor though.
My first dog was a rat terrier that loved to hunt but did more of what he wanted to do. I now have a pointer/border collie that wants to please me at whatever he does.

It's all personal preference neither is better than the other, I have had both and you can have good and bad with either sex.
