Barrel program cost---new math?
« on: February 20, 2008, 12:33:34 PM »
Ok, I have a 22 mag Sportster that I am very happy with. It's very accurate with Winchester 40 grain super X ammo and many groundhogs, crows and a fair number of raccoons can attest to that. I do like this rifle as it's lightweight, easy to carry, and can take the bumps that my night fox\coon hunts dish out.

So, I was looking at the H&R web site at the barrel accessory program, then I read some post here (yeah...Tim posted 'em....and he is the H&R Guru). But I'm gonna do some math here....and maybe I'm missin something here....so please chime in and tell me where I have missed something. (Yeah Tim....I'm talkin to you)

Ok. I checked "Bud's Gun Shop" which is a pretty good place to check gun prices. A delivered 22 LR cost $144. (Prolly that at my local gun dealer). Then I need a scope mount....about $12....so the total will come to about $156.  Now, if I go the barrel program route, the 22LR cost $59...H&R S&H and install is $25, and I figure $15 for me to ship my receiver to H&R. Now, H&R will give me the scope mount for FREE with the barrel program. So, the total cost is $99.

The cost difference is $57 to go with the barrel program. Yeah...it's not gonna break the bank or anything....but that's a 36% cost savings over a new gun.

Ok.....I;m duckin.....fire when ready!

Dave

Just depends on where ya get the Sportster, it sells for $117 at Walmart and less at Academy and Dicks, if those are options for ya. But when you have to order one, pay shipping and FFL fee, you have to weigh the cost of the barrel at $59+$25+$15 for a total of $119 ::) $99 vs the cost of a complete rifle and the scope rail, just depends on whether you like complete rifles or accessory barrels, I prefer complete rifles, but that's just me, a fella just does what he feels is right. ;) I just bought an as new youth Sportster last fall from another member here for $85 in a FTF deal.

I dunno Tim, but in this neck of the woods $59 +$25 + $15 still ='s $99.00.
I do like the idea of getting a complete gun but the cost of the scope rail does enter into it....<><....:)

P.S. Tim, if you want to make a cool $5 profit on the $85 gun you bought last year, drive out here to Cape Cod on the right coast and I'll give you $90 for it in a FTF, I'd like to get to meet you anyway,
heck we could even put you up for a few days before you drove back to the left coast!!!....<><....:)

Yeah...well if I can get it for $117, I would just get the gun. Thanks for the link Tim...I knew you would chizle a few bucks out of that difference.

Thanks.

I fixed it Andy, thanks!

You're welcome Dave, sorry about the miscalculation there, that's what I get for doing it in my head!!  :-[ ::) ;D

For scope rails, the Leupold rail is just $6 if you wanta save some money, of course it doesn't come with a hammer extension.
