My New .500

Got my new X-Frame yesterday!  It's the John Ross Performance Center Special.  5" barrel with no compensator and a barrel tightening nut.  This is my first performance center Smith, and I'm afraid I'm hooked.

Have not shot yet.  I have some 440gr Ultramax that are advertised at 1350fps.  I'm going to try to get to the range next weekend.  I'm going to get the RCBS 360gr mold and load up some plinkers and increase the recoil level gradually. 

I like the looks of the Lee 440gr, and the article about the gun and it's development has some great info on how to duplicate his custom molds.  Read the article at the link, it also talks about how a friend of his put 50 consecutive shots into a 55gal drum at 700yds.

I don't have much experience with full house loads of this size, and I want to cut my teeth on something a little softer before I go to the really big boomers.  The guy who put this out is launching 720gr @ 1250fps.

WOW.

I know a lot of folks will say that there is no need for something this big, and that can be debated somewhere else.  I just really enjoy S&W and look forward to exploring just how far this sucker will go...preferably without putting a divot in my head.

friend was going to shoot one that belonged to another friend.  They had been shooting rifles off a bench.  He sat down at the bench and touched one off.  The recoil slammed his elbow into the bench top.  Long story short....he ended up having surgery to remove a bone splinter or two from his elbow. :-[

I got my 500 right after they came out, Got it for about 800.00. Seems  like anything else Price keeps going up.

Range Report:

I LIKE IT!!!!

Recoil, while sharp, is not unmanageable.   All shots touching at 25 yds.  Didn't shoot it much as I am not used to this much recoil and need to start working myself up to that level.

I will soon be casting bullets and loading my own so that I can start low and practice in volume.  This is one cool gun.  Not having a muzzle brake makes it much more pleasant to shoot.  Very low perceived muzzle blast.  Range Master(Mistress?) said she thought I was shooting a shotgun from the way it sounded and was going to chew me out.
