870 12ga mod vs full for turkeys
« on: February 13, 2008, 02:40:31 PM »
I have another question for you guys. Would a full choke on my 2 3/4 870 be a very noticeable advantage over a mod for turkeys?I presently have 2-28" mod barrells and have been thinking of looking for a full. I will take the 3"20ga full out when I get it back and compare the patterns with the 12ga mod but I would prefer to use the 12. The 870 was my wife's Grampa's so I think it should be back in the field again for more than clay pigeons and rabbits.

What is an advantage vs a disadvantage really depends on how close you call them in before shooting. I have a friend up in PA who seems to want to call them into about ten yards before shooting for him a skeet choke might be an advantage really.

What you would want ideally is the correct choke for the distance your turkey is standing so you get a nice even shot distribution but a dense enough pattern to not have holes while at the same time having as wide a pattern as possible just in case you're hold isn't perfect.

In real life inside 30 yards the MOD is plenty and inside 40 so is the FULL. Beyond that you need some special choke and need to work with your loads to be sure what is what.

If you're calling them to 30 yards or less it's not really important what choke tube you have as any load over 1.5 oz is likely gonna get the job done.
