5mm ?
« on: February 10, 2008, 10:03:09 AM »
Any word if they are going to pop out a 5mm barrel yet for the new ammo being produced?

TC is going to........

They already have .204 barrels............just need to chamber for 5mm rim fire.

I hope so..........

I'm just hoping they'll offer what they've already said they'll offer, which they've already stepped back on, can't see them committing to a chambering that ammo isn't readily available for yet.   :(

I doubt it as Remington has already been down that road. I get a kick out of all the 5mm ammo guys are trying to dump on the auction sites every where from $75-$85 a box ain't much of it sellin though.Kurt

justbill, I'm sure the guy who built my 7.62 Tokarev handi could do a 5mm for you, he just needs a reamer and a donor barrel. The custom world and guns already in existence seem to be the market for now although certain "insiders" hint of firearms to come. Guy

Some may not realize.........new 5mm ammo in 30 g is being made again

Centurion is making it.

I spoke with H & R customer service yesterday and apparently there is no buzz around there about the 5mm..........at all.

In fact I don't think there is a buzz there about anything!  They are dropping the 22 Hornet,  said they are not even sure they will manufacture the mag calibers THEY SAID THEY WOULD PRIOR.

Frankly,  I am not impressed at all.............a bit discusted.

I think Big Green Remington is to blame !

I'm most inclined to think the bean counters that own the holding company are behind it all. Those who expressed hope at the initial news of the mergers may be dis-appointed. The antis can buy out multiple brands with one check now!

"I think Big Green Remington is to blame !"

I'd say a really screwed up economy is to blame.  They have to make money.  Producing things that don't turn at least 20% profit doesn't make sense.  I believe the magnum calibers would see very limited sales personally.  People that want beanfield rifles expect way sub-MOA accuracy.  95% of the shooting public don't think of the Handi Rifle when they want a high level of accuracy.

That's what I think Tim. I sure hope when it become widely available the price gets down to $12-14 or less. I think that 1 box went for $27 on Gun broker and I don't think that one was available . I though I had read that it was not gonna be out til late 2008? Kurt

Sounds like everyone is getting their 5mm ammo orders now and some fine reports are starting to trickle in... It has really taken me back by seeing the renewed interest in the 5mm Mag, I thought I was the lone ranger but many are buying it and some have not even found a riffle to shoot it in...

Wouldn't it be funny if this darn thing turned out like the HMR and takes most by surprise... A mighty fine round it is... as for me it makes no difference, I reload for a 10" contender and a clip fed remmy... Good fortune came my way and I have another clip fed Remmy on the way and will use the rimfire ammo in it to see how the stuff compares to my reloads. The 32 gr V-Max is really a great combo with the 5mm in a PD town... My 30 gr molly coat cast bullets work great for head shooting squirrels...

I say bring it one NEF, I'll buy two and both will end up being a 20 cal something els

Some folks on Rimfire Shooters have received ammo. I'm waiting still for 500 rounds each from J&G and Old Western Scrounger. I had two 591s but beat one to pieces on a fence post when I found out they were taking orders but had no product. I don't run my business that way and it pisses me off to no end. My Dad, however, gave me his 591 so I'm back to two again.... and still my ammo is backordered! >:(  The 5mm shot every bit as accurately as my Anschutz or my custom H&R with the original 38 grn ammo and I have two boxes of that left. If I get good results with the new ammo and can secure enough of it the 17hmr goes bye-bye in my life. Good luck to all, Guy

Good thing they don't ask if ya have anger managment problems on the FFL background check form. I'll bet that rifle and fence post won't back order your ammo again. Kurt

Good one Kurt! Being a Jew raised in a very rural area by my mother, Dad was gone in one war or another for over twenty years, I was trained to hold back my frustrations all the time. Thank God my own military career let me actually vent my frustrations on real enemies! There is no rush to me as good as pounding the piss out of someone or something. I usually go out to the woods or pasture to avoid upsetting the wife and kids. The last bar room brawl I was in my squad and I thrashed a bunch of Czechs and I got 18 stitches in my lower lip! Corpsman sewed it up nice as pie and no officers asked any questions. I split about 8 cords of wood a year by hand and this usually works well to get rid of tension. All in all [except for not having my 5mm ammo] life has treated me quite well. My best, Guy

I just had to post this here, since some of you are looking for 5mm.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=413149

It is currently showing as Out Of Stock, due 3/31, but it doesn't hurt to keep it on your radar.... just in case someone decides to actually make a new rifle for it ;)

That price is a little more realistic and I'm in there buyers club. I've seen them back order dates change many times though. I might just order 250 though. Kurt

I now have 1000 rounds of thirty grain. It functions and shoots well in the Rem 591. A handi would be good. Looking into possibilities.

Looks like a neato round with a lot more thump than the 17 HMR. A lot less number of firearms chambered for it however. I beleive I'll keep shooting my 22 magnum however expecially after buying 30 boxes of Winchester 22 magnum 40gr ammo that was marked down as clearance at walmart for $4.50 a box.

I do like the oddball calibers/firearms that not everybody and their brother has 2 of.
So if a reasonably price Remington 5mm rifle presents itself after ammo availability is assured, I'll probably try it out just to be the odd duck at the range.

Sorry I don't get around as much as I use too, I had been seeing it posted on saubier.com/rimfirecenteral and a couple e-mails where guys was getting it and some test have been done. some are not having as good of luck as others but I also read where some of the first ammo had some issues???

all in all I am very excited about it for all of thew guys who have these riffles. I shoot my 591 as a centerfire with awesome results and just received another on e last week. I might set it up to shoot the rimfire stuff so I can see how it performs.

If NEF made a barrel I bet you would be surprised how many would be sold to shoot the new ammo and even quite a few to shoot some other 20 caliber wildcats...

I realize there are production cost but when you are in the business of selling you can not sell something you don't have so I say make it and they will buy it!

Yah, thats what I said when I saw a pile of the Winchester 22 Magnum ammo sitting next to some boxes of 3" magnum Steel Drylock shells marked at $5/box.

I thought all of the 22 mag's were FMJ's but about 6 boxes were hollowpoints.

And we were complaining about $10-13/box for 17 magnum ammo as far as the price comparison for 5mm ammo

Well my supply of 5mm showed up yesterday from the Guide got 500 ended up being $15.80 a box with the discounts I had. Not quite 13-14 but a lot better than the $27 I saw 2 months ago. Now to take a couple of boxes to sweeten the pot and get that extra 591 out of my buddies safe. My local gun shop seems to be carrying lots of Centurian 22 stuff lately but he said he thinks it's (5mm)is still just coming from the factory and not distributers. I think he ain't got non cause his wife has a bunch of remmington for $60 a box yet. Kurt

I'm going to build one in centerfire just can't see that much for  rimfire ammo. i think using a ppc case design for a 5mm would result in a super accurate round and just about the ultimate in a varmint gun.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten
