I've run hounds for 20+ years in Maine and I've seen a few smart dogs that were able  to run multiple types of game but you need to be smarter than the hound or you're going to end up with a trash runner and never know what the dogs is trailing.

I'd would concentrate on getting a dog or pup from an established/proven big game line of dogs rather than a specific breed. Avoid hot nosed competition bred treeing idiot lines of dogs (especially Walkers). I'd suggest the following lines for big game bred hounds -

Bluetick - Cameron, Sebastion
Plott - Weems, Dollins, Star Mountain
Black & Tan - McDonald
Walkers - Nance, Myers, Finley River

Of that list, I would go for the Plott. And would agree that trying to train dogs on multiple game, usually results in a trashing dog. JMO

They run Plott hounds a lot around the Woodbury Wildlife area here in Central Ohio.
Release the hounds!

Have any of you crossed a good hound with an Airedale, have had a couple of Airedales
but never had a chance to cross them.

I'm just curious as I have nill hound experience, but why the decline in Walker type hounds?  And what is meant by "Avoid hot nosed competition bred treeing idiot lines of dogs (especially Walkers)."  I'm not doubting the validity of the statement; it just sounds a lot like the rub with field trial bred bird dogs over-running birds and dogs placed on race and not hunt being bred.  Similar breed development, or no?? Edumacate me, please.

Usually a hot nosed dog, cannot (or will not) work a cold trail. They instead will have a tendency to lay back and let a cold nose dog work the trail until it warms the trail up (gets closer to the game). Then the hot nose will work ahead of the slower dog, and tree the game, thereby getting the credit for the tree.
In the field under actual hunting conditions these type of dogs (hot nose dogs) are useless, unless you accidentally dump them out right on top of a hot track, or you have a cold nose dog, figuring out the track.

The Walker breed have been bred to long for UKC & PKC nite hunt competitions. Most lines of Walkers are to hot nosed to make a good big game hound. They run big, cross a hot track and tree. Most don't have the nose to work a cold track which is needed for big game dogs.

The Nance bred Walkers were exceptional big game dogs but that line has just about died out.
