Muzzle Brake For .308?
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:49:04 AM »
I know there is a tactical T3 with a brake, but I have the 595.  I would love to be a better shot, and focus on the target rather than the recoil of the lightweight .308 cartridge.  Yes, I am gun-shy.  Hard to explain, but I need a lot more practice to overcome serious recoil anticipation / overcontrol.  Would a $200 "Magnabrake" on a 22 inch barrel do much for recoil on this cartridge?

If I was you I'd spend the $200 towards buying a 223 and practice shooting with that. I have the T3 in 308, it is a lightweight rifle so recoil is evident. I actually put the Limbsaver recoil pad on it which helps. Really the recoil of the 308 is not bad at all, it could be the noise which makes you flinch? I have only owned rifles for a few years, coming here as a foreigner. The first time I shot a 30-06 I hated it. I bought my first centerfire, a 223 and I just shot the hell out of it. I can shoot in my back yard which helps. I now shoot 308, 7mm Rem Mag and anything else which comes along. I believe that it was trigger time with the 223 which helped me. I sight in a lot of friends rifles and I see them flinch. It is the old adage, practice makes perfect.

Another option is to handload some lighter loads for practice.  308 isn't bad on recoil, just a matter of getting used to.

FWIW - muzzle brake might do more harm than good - rifle really barks with a brake - scary

Thanks...I'll save the money from a brake and put it towards NP3 refinish or something really useful!

Hey Chip.

Put a limbsaver on the gun, then if you still think its too hard of a kicker, mag-na-port.  Also, load, buy some lite for caliber bullets.

Limbsaver is on the rifle already.  Had a custom grind-to-fit pad installed by Limbsaver.

.308 's bark is worse than its bite.... get some trigger time in with a .223..... low recoil and a fair bit less muzzle blast.... train yourself with that....
another thing... last i checked, factory rounds for .223 were dirt cheap compared to .308....
I actually do most of my training with an old .22 LR... The best way to cure a flinch is build muscle memory... that comes from repitition....

I guess that I'm getting ahead of myself.  You didnt say you're flinching...

depending on what you use the rifle for, and how often you use it, really depends on what you should do.   I use my .30 cals for hunting mainly and plink with the .22 and old M1 carbine....    If you're strictly a paper puncher.... go buy a good tactical .223 and have fun.    Keep  the .308 around for the real long distance stuff if you're into that kinda thing....

just my .000002 cents worth....
