The cost of the scope should not exceed the cost of the rifle.

I have a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 SF BDC on a 243 Ultra, great glass, and the BDC reticle would come in handi for some long range shooting with 45-70. ;)

If you don't mind a bigger objective and a bit more power, the Mueller 8.5-25x44 Tactical is a great scope, the mildot reticle could be used for long range too, depending on the loads you shoot, the eye relief may be short tho.

That's rather humorous Towpro. But this is to be a working weapon not a play thing. If I win the lottery I will have a Panda action built to handle the rim of the 45-70 and then put a stainless steel match grade barrel (with the rifling pitch set to optimize the 500gr. slug)with a thumb hole carbon fiber stock a jewel trigger and a night force scope. This would allow me to do  some serious longe range thumping.

I mounted the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36mm with the B&C reticle.  The large line after the cross hairs is right on at 300 yards.  Here is my pic.  I used the H&R base and Warne rings.  I really think it is all the scope you will need for most situations.  The purists will hate you for doing it.

If you want the best scope you can buy, consider the Bushnell 3200 or 4200 Elite series.
