Rem 700 ADL

I just put one on Lay-a-way ($375.00) new in box at a local pawn shop in 243cal.  Personally, I don't like that cal., but if I decide to keep that cal. what kind of accuracy can I expect?  I would like to rebarrel for a 7.62x39.  Whata think?  Thanks guys.  Later.

Well if the rifle does its part and you do yours, ti should be quite accurate. Don't underestimate the .243, it can be used for a lot things. May I ask why you don't like the caliber?

Actually, I it's not that I don't like the 243cal. , it's just that I prefer a 30cal. etc. 308, 7.62x39, 308x1.5 not to mention the 30cal is much easier to cast good lead boolits for.  Thanks for the input guys.  Later.

Most of the ADLs I've been associated with have been very accurate shooting MOA with no real problem with a variety of loads. They seem to be very accurate rifles. If you really feel you just gotta have a .30 caliber it would make a lot more sense to go to the .308 Winchester. Trying to go to the 7.62x39 will cost you far more than you already have in the rifle if you are dead set on it you should have just bought one to start with and would come out far cheaper to trade your ADL for one rather than trying to convert.

Buying a new rifle to immediately make something else of it is generally a losing proposition and you're almost always better off just buying what you want to begin with. It's always far cheaper.

i gotta agree with GB on this one...you will spend $200 between the barrel (this one can't be reamed at 7.62x39 without a LOT of headaches) and having it installed...to save $10.00 a box on bullets...gonna take you a long time to get the money back...

Yup, you're probably right, but trying to find a 700ADL in 7.62x39 is like trying to find a flea in a haystack.  The way I look at it, if I can sell the current barrel unfired some of those funds(very little I know) can go towards the new barrel.  Boy, you guys sure know how to rain on my parade. :)  Later.

It's highly unlikely you'll find a buyer for that barrel. Yeah lotsa folks think that way but seldom do they find a buyer. I doubt Remington ever made an ADL in that chambering but CZ makes one and it's not much if any more expensive than the Remington. If you just gotta have that chambering that's the way I'd suggest you go.

Remington also has the 799 bolt action mauser action in 7.62 x 39 and 223 Rem.

at a decent gun show, or one of the wal marts that still sells 'ADL's you should find one for less.    it's no bargain, as has already been said, to buy a rifle you aren't happy with.     

get your money back or put it down on something else, if it's not too late.

You would be better off with the 243 it shoots really well. Unless you reload the 7.62x39 as the surplus ammo is not vary accurate anyway. To shoot factory ammo stay with the 243 more choices for bullet weights. With better range than the 7.62x39 anyway. The 243 is a really nice round good for varmints to deer to bear. Keep it the way it is and shoot it.

I doubt you'll get very much for your barrel because many custom gun makers buy the cheap remingtons just for their actions and sell their factory barrels.  I've seen many go for $20-$50 pluse if you do not have the wrenches to take the barrel off yourself a gunsmith will probably charge you at least that to take one off!  I'd follow GrayBeard's advice.

May I ask what is your fascination with the 7.62x39?  I can think of a number of cartridges that would equal or better what the 7.62x39 brings to the table. Beginning with the venerable 30-30. The 300 Savage would far outstrip it and, as posted, the .308 is beyond comparison as is the 7-08. And, of course, the .260.  The three of which would be easy conversions from your .243.
Not to be a total cloudburst on your parade, but if you're wanting a conversion to a  7.62x39 as a "one off", I would think you could find a better platform than a .243.

The  799 is the way to go if you're dead set on that caliber. A friend just bought one and we did some shootin last week .
Good shooter , reasonably priced . I would forget the rebarrel idea , thats just my suggestion.

I asked him whats so appealing about this caliber ? Turns out he's into warsaw calibers , other than using it to feed an AK or SKS I seen no real appeal.

That said , give the 799 some consideration .
 Its like a mini mauser action / control feed bolt.

 You got the right gun and caliber.I hunted with a .243 for 20 ye3ars before switching to something else. I sold it to a buddy who still hunts with it. I used 85 gr nosler solid base for  about everything. From muile deer on down you will have no trouble. I often used 75 gr Hp for varmits. There was never a ground hog too far away to shoot at. One day I killed 5 big bucks in about 10 seconds, all went down where they stood. Used a plain Remington 100 grn factory load.

The 7.62/39 case is slightly smaller at the base than a 243 Win. This may [?] make extraction a problem. This is a rifle-to-rifle thing. I know a lot of guys who make them into 6mm PPCs and they work but????  I prefer to start with a .223 boltface and ope it UP to the 7.62/39 [PPC].
I think you`ll find  if you use a really good bullet like the Nosler 95 gr Wiz-Gigger you will get reliable kills and not too much meat loss. Good luck or get it rebarreled to a 308.
