Receiver pin removal????
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:13:38 PM »
Well...I got my "new to me" SB2 45-70! A bit of a disappointment, it's in good shape, but it does NOT have a stainless barrel as it was advertised. No biggie, but now I want to completely refinish it with a parkerized finish. I have an old H&R topper (my first gun!) that has alot of surface rust, so I'll sacrifice it for parkerizing tests.
To do the refinishing, I'll need to completely disassemble everything, so how do I remove the receiver pins? Just tap them out with a drift? Looks like they are knurled on one end, to keep them in place, so they'll have to come out one way only....which way?
Thanks for any help.

The pins are splined on the left side, so they can only be removed one way. See Perklo's trigger hone info in the FAQs and Help sticky, it's the most detailed. DO NOT REMOVE the 3/8" hinge pin if you want the barrel to fit when you put back together unless you can index it so you can install it in the same position.

What made ya think you were getting a stainless 45-70 which they've never made...yet? The one in the 2008 catalog isn't available yet, they haven't even decided where the SS barrel will be made!! If you saw SS listed on an auction site, it means single shot. :-\

Well...it was advertised as stainless, not "SS", and I wasn't familiar with these enough to know that it wasn't offered in stainless. It's this one...http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,136842.msg1098529014.html#msg1098529014  ...and there were enough clues in those replies to give me a heads-up.
I took a magnet with me when I picked it up, so I knew it wasn't before I paid, so it's all on me, cuz I bought it anyway. I had looked at the website for other barrells before I picked it up...they offered other caliber stainless barrells, so I ass-u-me-d that the 45-70 was made as well. It's not a big deal, and I don't hold the seller at fault, he honestly thought it was. But now that it's mine, and steel, I don't want it silver.

The "stainless" steel that rilfe barrels are made from is magnetic, so that test with a magnet is no test at all.  Try putting some cold blue on it and see if it takes, if it is stainless the parkerizing won't work.  Larry

I'm in the sheet metal business, and although I know that there is such a thing as magnetic stainless, I doubted that statement, but I just checked my stainless Marlins, stainless Rugers, and stainless Taurus...you are correct sir! The receivers on the Rugers (pistols), and the mag tubes on the Marlins are the only non-magnetic stainless....live and learn!

And if you leave that "stainless" barrel out in the weather it will rust.  When is "stainless" not really "stainless"?  When it a rifle barrel.  Larry

Let us know what you figure out on the finish. FWIW, the new stainless 45-70 will be 400 series stainless with magnetic properties.

This one is definately painted, or coated with something, but the rear of the chamber is black, and this doesn't appear to be carbon build up. I removed the scope and mount, and there's no evidence of rust under there, or anywhere for that matter, but I'll assume that it is steel anyway.

And if you leave that "stainless" barrel out in the weather it will rust.  When is "stainless" not really "stainless"?  When it a rifle barrel.  Larry

I will Tim. I haven't shot it yet, got 2 boxes of shells with it, along with mild 4 reloads that the PO had worked up for 100yds with the scope. I'd like to shoot it befor I do anything, and refinish while my shoulder heals....LOL!

Let us know what you figure out on the finish. FWIW, the new stainless 45-70 will be 400 series stainless with magnetic properties.

It doesn't look like it has much of a recoil pad on it, I'd be putting a Limbsaver on it if you're gonna shoot levergun or better loads in it, a little weight or a mercury recoil suppressor in the stock bolt hole will help too.  ;)

The recoil pad is an Uncle Mike's, the PO said his 15yr old shot the reloads fine, but the factory stuph was much more substantial.

Anything is possible, Shaner has an accessory 24" Hornet bull barrel, from what we know, it's a one off, no one else has ever claimed to have one anyway.  ???
