I too hope no one gets hurt. I guess it's a little too much to hope for no damage as the weather patterns around the world seem to be intensifying. Fortunately we have not had a tornado in my region for some time but I have seen the pictures of the devastation in the U.S.A. and wonder if they will ever be able to predict these things with sufficient warning time.

My wife and I spent the evening hours in our bathroom listening to the wind howl. There's never been anything quite like this in our area before. It was one storm cell after another hammering the local area. At one time there was 4 tornadoes on the ground at once. After giving the Southaven, Ms / Memphis, Tn area a working over it moved on to Jackson,Tn (a 100 miles away) and knocked down a few buildings. It was bad...really bad.

We haven't had any tornadoes here in SC yet to my knowledge. The wind has been gusting to about 35mph and staying right at 21 SSW. I hope it doesn't get any worse. I think I have one tree down but I am not sure. The pressure is down to 29.70in.

Hope everyone that were hit with the Tornadoes are ok.

I live in Southaven, and yes they were every where.  I believe the final count in NW MS and in the Memphis area was 9. Three dead in Memphis when a warehouse collapsed.  The schools were let out early, college classes and church classes were canceled, but still folks had to go shopping!! A Sears in a mall in Memphis had one wall fall in!  thank God there weren't anymore deaths than there were. Also, Union University in Jackson, Tn. took a direct hit with several students trapped under the rumble.  Two are still in the hospital in critcial condition.  Amazing no one died.

You guys posted before today's news  I guess. Unless your power is down enough to not know.

Early news here in CO said 52 had died in those storms.

That's terrible news.  Nothing I can do about it except regret it for everyone.

When it came thru these parts it dumped 2-4 feet of snow in the mtns, and we got
3" here at my place .But, the wind blew hard during the night as there were drifts up to
10".  Heavy drifts for no more snow that fell.

Any GB members get it?

Alabama was also hard hit by the tornados with massive damage but little to no loss of life that I've heard of but lots of injuries. It really amazes me seeing the damage some times to think how little life is lost. When you see the devastation you'd think the death toll would be far higher than it is most of the time.

My wife was telling me of a family in a trailer got lifted and the trailer turned upside down but no one was killed. I've seen the destruction they bring first hand many times as they do come thru this area regularly and every time I see it I am awe struck that more lives were not lost.

My folks live just east of Nashville but luckily they were missed.  Many of their friends did loose everything.  Castillion Springs just a few miles up the road, was totally wiped out according to my Dad.  He also said Lafayette was hit pretty hard, and they had closed the area around it.

I currently live in the only state that does not have Tornadoes.  The wife has been talking about moving to the lower 48, and I told her the only way I will move there is if we build a tornado proof house.  Her having lived in Kansas when she was small fully agreed.  In fact I can't believe people living in tornado prone areas don't build homes that are tornado proof.  I guess they all live in denial that it will happen to them.

I don't think it's so much a matter of denial as all of us realize it could happen to us. But not many can afford a tornado proof house so many opt for what they can afford which is a storm shelter or a basement to hide in when tornados are happening. I cannot imagine what it would cost to build a truly tornado proof house other than maybe an under ground one which is also not cheap. Not much that is man made will stand up to a cat five tornado.

I live in an area that tornados come within a few miles of regularly but which has historically never had one within a mile of me. Will that always be the case? Dunno I sure hope so but I've lived in this area ll my life and so far have never even seen a tornado and for sure my finances are not such that I can move into a tornado proof house never has been and never will be within reach of my finances.

GB:  An Earth Sheltered house is not that much more expensive to build than a conventional stick home.  Steel reinforced concrete, won't burn, and when buried on three sides against the prevailing winds it becomes tornado proof.  The real savings will come in lower insurance rates, and cost in maintenance.  No roof to replace every 15 to 20 years.  And they are so much quieter than conventional homes.  Also the cost of heating and cooling is much lower.

Hardly practical in most of the tornado belt where the ground is for the most part fairly flat and especially in places like here where the normal average rainfall is about 60" a year. Even those with basements with far less dirt against them than you mention stay wet and mold and mildew are major problems. I think you need the right location for such and quite frankly that's not most of the places we live here in tornado alley.

Saw on the news that there was three to five tornadoes in that area.  All around Nashville, but none hit Nashville itself.  The worst one started at Gallatin, ran NE to Castallion Springs then turned N to Lafayette, then on to the Kentucky border.  Castallion Springs is where that toddler was found alive, 150 yards from the demolished home, and his mother was killed.
