Shikari 45-70
« on: February 01, 2008, 05:26:04 AM »
I am looking at one of these at an auction coming up in a few days.
Ser# AJ278940 guess that would make it 1972 build date.
is this a BP or smokless rifle?
I have seen them mentioned here but not much info.
Is this rifle desirable?
tell it like it is.(or like you see it) ;D

Just for quick info, I've had one since they first came out. As long as the barrel is in good shape, go for it. It works every time and settles every argument.
The Shikari has real rifling (not micro groove) and a very short throat.....adequate for factory OAL but watch the seating depth on handloads.
It's rated for trapdoor loads only.

The Shikari is what started my addiction!!!  I have a 45-70 that I put thousands of rounds through and it is a great gun.  I replaced it with a stronger single shot and then converted this to a muzzle loader.  I tapped and threaded in a 209 breech plug and now use it as a back up BP only rifle.

I would have to say that this Shikari has over 40 deer to it's credit with 45-70 and at least 7 using BP.

If this is your first 45-70 you will love it but it leads you to bigger things.

I think the Shikari is a very good looking rifle....I have always liked it.   They carry good and point and balance well.
