686 value

I'm considering selling my 686 to purchase either a 629 or smaller conceal carry gun.  Looking to find out the rough value.  I purchased in about 20 years ago.  stainless steel 6" barrel excellent condition, had a master action job done on it (probably not worth anything) and comes with the original and pachemyr grips.

I've been watching my local gun shops for a nice, used 686... they seem to run between $475 and $550 in our area (NE Illinois)... but I imagine the owners got considerably less when they traded it in to the shop keeper.

Around here that would be quite high as new 686s are selling pretty much inside of that range. In my area I think you'd be hard pressed to get over $350 trade value from a dealer and would do good to get over $400 straight selling it.

You might find a person wanting just exactly what you've got and who hasn't had much luck finding one who would pay considerably more but that would be a lucky deal for you I think. I did just that a few years ago at a gun show. I'd been looking for a S&W 66 6" for a long time with absolutely no success finding one. A guy there (not a dealer) had a really clean little used one on his table for $450 with a nice leather holster. He wouldn't budge a dime on it and I really wanted it. I gave him his asking price of $450 even tho I felt I was paying at least $100 to much and more likely $125 too much but I'd been looking without success a long time and he had excactly what I wanted.

I keep thinking I'd like to have a 6" 686 again to turn into a five shot .44 Special but if I had it I'm not sure I'd have the money to have it converted and quite honestly I much prefer shooting the M66/M19s over the heavier 686 guns.

Here n my part of California, a 6" 686 gets about $300, as a trade in; and, costs about $450-550 buying it. In that my gunsmith is also the retailer, I never argue with him over a few bucks. My goal is to help keep him in business. Can you imagine the day when all the first hand information will come from WalMart employees, or gunbroker.com. Geesh, rue the day.
