Browning Auto-5
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:59:20 AM »
I just got an old ( 1951 ) Browning Auto-5 12 gauge shotgun. The stocks are kinda rough , was hoping to replace them inexpensively.
Has anybody got any ideas where to get stocks at a good price ?

check the master midway catalog.  Same as Remington Mdl 11.  Also check Browning's website for instructions to adjust the recoil ring, (spring) before you crack the receiver. Great Turkey guns in full choke.

For a good set of stocks it's going to cost you if you just need a set to put on to use the gun Ramline has some in plastic. If the finish on your stocks are the problem you may try to find someone to refinish them it is a great shotgun i have 2 of them one with the plastic stocks and one wood i hunt with the plastic one. Hope it helps

tomzuki,
Thanks for the heads-up about being the same as Remington Mdl 11. Also a good tip about the recoil spring , I wouldnt have thought about that.

handi243,
I saw set of the Ramline's on ebay , it is an inexpensive way to go. There are several pits and scratches on the buttstock near the checkering. I would probably have to sand the checkering down smooth. Would that de-value the gun alot ?
Thanks,   Jonboy

Values of gun really depends on a couple different things if your looking to resale then you may leave it like it is or replace it with wood (there more valueable that way). If its like my passed down from family and NOT going anywhere refinishing is ok some people like the original some don't so you have to make the choice. I've seen then sell for 200.00 to 2000.00 for a in the box A-5. Where i live they are worth alot of money good luck i love shooting mine.

Its a gun I just got recently. I am just trying to decide whether to restore it or sell it. I kinda turned into a handi holic lately and was thinking of selling it and getting another handi rifle. Thanks for all your input.

Rangr44,

Model 11 stocks are not the same as Browning A5 stocks, and you would be much better served using a true A5 stock. Depending on how bad your stocks are, you could refinish them and keep it as original as possible. Unless you get a true Browning stock, I don't think that anyone makes a round knob stock for replacement, except for a true Browning replacement stock (Midwest Gun Works has them new if you don't want used).

Macon Gunstocks also makes replacement stocks for the A5, including the round knob style.  See them here:
