45-70 Buffalo Classic
« on: January 20, 2008, 07:01:32 AM »
I don't know if this is the right forum, but I am about to start loading a Buffalo Classic with a 32 in. barrel.  The bullet is going to be a rem. 405 sp. and I need some loads, pressure, and velocity.  Any information that is valid and has been tested will be greatly appreciated.

H&R will tell you that levergun levels are safe in the BC, you can read more about H&R 45-70 load levels in the FAQs in the More Handi info section.

If you have no manuals, I suggest getting the Lyman 48th, it has 7 different powders listed in their 45-70 trapdoor data for the 405gr Rem, it would be an excellent manual to aquire, there are 8 powders listed in the levergun data which is rated at the SAAMI max of 28kcup for trapdoor data. Those powders are IMR4198, Rl7, N130, XMR2015, IMR3031, H322, H4895, IMR4064 and Varget.

An inexpensive alternative would be the Loadbook for the 45-70.

Hodgdon has data for the 400gr Speer which would work for the 405gr Rem bullet, same for Accurate, their Ruger data is loaded to the same pressure as Hodgdon's levergun data which is fine for the BC, but you'll likely want to stay in the low levergun levels or upper trapdoor levels due to the recoil. Alliant has trapdoor data for the 400gr Speer also. Realguns has specific data for the 405gr Rem too, but in upper levergun levels.
