Have one on my 686 and like it. It's a tad bit louder than my friends non-ported 6'', but it doesn't have the muzzle jump his has either. As I've said before, my youngest has shot full house .357's out of it since he was eight years old. I've been contemplating getting a new 629 pp also.

I recently got a 629 Classic with the power port, I have only had it out to shoot one time, but I like it, it's quite accurate with either full house 44 mag loads or milder 44 special power loads.  I have shot double action revolvers in competition so I'm used to double action shooting for accuracy, the only thing I had to do with this one was to replace the trigger rebound spring with a lighter one from Wolff springs, I didn't mess with the hammer spring at all, after replacing the trigger rebound spring I had a trigger I could work with.

I have a 629-4 Power Port and it's quite pleasant to shoot as is the 686-4 Power Port.
The PP versions are by far my favorites to take to the range.

I have the ported 6 1/2" 629 Classic. I do not know if the port helps, and if so, just how much. I do not find this revolver unpleasant to shoot with factory ammunition. I also have a 4" 686 and a 6" ported 686. I really do not notice any significant difference when firing the same ammunition with these revolvers. Thus, I really do not think the ported feature does a great deal with the longer barreled handguns ... maybe the shorter barrel versions benefit more.

I have a 6 inch 686 and a 686 K-comp with 3 or 4 inch barrel.  Both barrels reduce muzzle rise as compared to my non ported versions.

You will want to shoot jacketed ammo not cast bullets of course.

SharonAnne,

Cast bullets will tend to clog or at least build up in porting.  It is difficult to clean.

Fred, I put over 100,000 rds of hard cast bullets through a 3 chamber compensator on my 45 and 75,000 through a 5 chamber 9x23. I had no problems. So, I guess I wouldn't hesitate with a power port. I just wondered if there was something special about a Power Port.

I've fired a number of hard cast through my 629-4 Power Port. While it didn't make any noticeable mess in the port it did leave a good bit of lead build up on the front sight where there lead vapors collected. It came off fairly easily.
