help fitting barrel to frame
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:25:08 AM »
I have a spare frame that I picked up without a barrel or stock.  I am trying to fit a barrel to it, but the fit is badly off.  The barrel is sitting down in the frame, level, gap between the frame and the barrel, but it is even.  The barrel will not latch up, I marked the barrel and there is about a tenth of an inch to go before the latch will fit into the slot.

This barrel fits into other frames that I have, even headspaces, so I am thinking that there is something odd about the frame.  Any thing that I should check?

How big is the gap between the frame and barrel?

What year manufacture is the frame? Look in the FAQ to find out from the serial numbers. Just guessing here, I bet you have an old frame. You also did not state what barrel you are trying to fit. If it is a high pressure barrel and the frame is old, I would advise you not take the time to make it fit. :(

It is a 1983 frame and the barrel is an SB1 410.

I don't have my feeler gauges handy, but the gap is about the thickness of a business card.

If the frame to barrel gap is wider at the top than at the bottom, the underlug pivot needs to be cut deeper to allow the action to close all the way, follow my barrel fitting info in the FAQs from start to finish, it will get you where you want to go. ;)

As near as I can tell the gap is even, I am a bit spooked about adjusting the barrel joint.  It looks like the barrel is sitting on the frame, like the frame was made for a smaller diameter barrel. ???

Were there .22RF frames made by the old H&R?
