A .243 Browning bolt action. Can't remember what model it was.

my dads is a gun that he put a lot of time in,he got it new surplus years ago.
a 1903a3 springfield he had the barrel cut and sportsterized with williams sights and drilled and tapped for a scope
and a fagen stock with lots of rubbing and almost has a gloss finish it has been hand rubbed so much.i think he held that gun more than us kids L.O.L. he still uses it every year, and took a deer again this year with it.I think that is his favorite as its the one he messes with all the time. he has a old winchester 94 32 spl. that has not had it's 5th box of shells shot in it yet.i asked this deer season why don't you shoot the  32 ? he said he has been offered lot's of money for that gun and now they don't make them he hates to get it dirty or scratch it he just keeps it oiled up and don't let it see daylight,so maybe that's his favorite.

I started this thread wondering how caliber choices have changed over the years.

I grew up with my grand dad... His was a rifle that was originally a model of 1917 30.06 that was sporterized sometime in the 60's, restocked with light maple wood and re-chambered in .308 Norma Magnum. It's been used but it still so pretty. Factory ammo runs 65.00-80.00 dollars a box and I don't reload so it sits in the safe.

Dads gun was a Savage 99 in 300 Savage. He still has it but quit hunting 15 years ago. He like to track deer with me when I get one but that's about it.

I'd have to ask....but if I have to guess, I'd say it's his sporterized Springfiend '03 in .35 Whelen.

I know he's got a good $1,500 invested into that rifle when he build it in the early 80s (including glass). VERY fancy walnut stock with ebony tip. He MANY hours invested into this rifle. VERY sweet shooting rig. I started bear hunting with that rifle, and was told if I ever dropped it or damaged it I could find a new family to live with.  :)

He always jokes about the rifle, having bought it for $50 many years ago. He bought a cheap rifle to invest $1,500 in...only to come out in the end with a rifle that probably would've been worth more if just left alone. :D

It would have been a browning 30-06.  I wish he were still alive to enjoy the much more vast collection I currently have and enjoy with my son.

My father loved his 300 Weatherby. As he got older he spent much more time at the range with his 22 semi auto. He would hook up with his pals and spend the afternoon target shooting after lunch.

I would say my dad's all time favorite rifle and cartridge is the 742 Rem. in 30-06...  I believe he used one to harvest this buck a few years ago...  Dad was crowding 90 when i took this pict...

The 28th of this month my dad will turn 95 and he still loves hunting, trapping and guns...

My dad has a Century Arms 7mm Rem mag.  Its a revamped p14 enfield that century arms did up in 7mm Rm Mag adn 300 win mag.    While quite plain and homely looking it does shoot pretty good, especiallly with 160gr accubonds @ 2900fps.   It seems to be the rifle he always takes hunting.   I alway shake my head when he opens the gun safe and grabs that ugly 7mm, mostly because he has to reach across the really nice custom 35 whlen I had built for him to get to it!

A 1896 30-40 Kraig with a amateurish cut barrel and stock but it sure knocked down deer.

My stepdad had a Savge 99 in 250/3000. Also first large rifle I ever shot. Over the years it never failed to take a deer. For some reason he decided to get it rechambered to 300 savage. Gun smith screwded it up royaly. Shortly after that it was stolen out of his truck. He always said who ever stole it woundent be able to hit anything with it if it decided to fire.

I now use my dads only rifle a Remington model 721 in .30-06. He never took a bear with it (it's taken a few deer). Now it's my turn to try.

maybe its just around here but it seems like every old guy you talk to has a story about hunting with a .303 British. Not the best gun around but you couple pick one up so cheep that everyone had one. I think almost as many deer and moose have fallen to the .303 as the 30-30. remember I did say almost.

:)My Dad was not really into hunting, but had a 94 32 spl carbine. I have it now, but my Grandfather was quite a hunter for his time and place. He told some fellows the nicest rifle he had ever seen was a Winchester .33. Some time later I ask him if he were buying a rifle what kind would it be??? He said without hesitation, "one like I've got." It was a model 54 in .30-06 caliber. I still have it although a friend made a beautiful custom stock for it, and I had it scoped. This fall I plan to use it on a whitetail hunt. It was on the first whitetail hunt I ever made 50 years ago, but then my Grandfather carried it and I carried the 32. May take it also, but in dim light the sights are tough to see. ;)

His favorite was a Belgian made Browning 22Lr auto with scope that he used to shoot quail with on the ranch roads. other than that he only shot his Browning auto-five 20 gauge. Man I miss him!

Both my father and Grandfather have passed but my dad loved his 30-40 Krag and my grandfather loved his old 1894 Winchester 30-30. I still have both guns and look at them often and remember some fun hunts.
