Colt revolver problems with worn timing?
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:45:28 PM »
I heard years ago that Colt double action revolvers were more inclined to timing wear over time compared to Smith and Wessons.  I heard this was a major problem with Colt Pythons, but how about the D frames and the Trooper Mk. 3 and 5 models?  My local gunshop guy thinks Colts are just fine, and the idea that they loose timing more quickly is bunk.

I am thinking of getting a Colt double action revolver, never had one before and would need to take into the account that these guns are getting old as it has been awhile since they left the factory.

Are they less quality than a Smith and Wesson?

Thanks.

I don't want to say that a Colt has a more delicate action, but maybe a more refined action. S&W a little more robust, or utilitarian. With a S&W, it could go a little out of time and still work fine, up to a point. A Colt, with the same wear, would be more likely to show the problem, maybe even lock up. If you treat it like a hollyweird gun, the Colt won't take the slamming the cylinder shut and excessively fast cycling as well as a S&W. But it's not good on either one. I consider the difference between the actions of Colt to S&W the sam as the difference between S&W and Ruger. But that's just my opinion.

You have just named one of the two reasons why i no longer have any Pythons, and why they don't get my vote for "all time best" revolver...  They go out of time too easily, and have a worse trigger than most N frame S&W's. "N" frames will out shoot them too...

I've bought more than one Python that needed a trigger job right out of the box...  I never bought an old M-27 that needed anything other than shooting!

I refuse to pay more for less...
