new lam stock!!!!!

I just got done doing the whole late Christmas thing with the family up here in Maine and I got just what I asked for.... A brand new thumbhole laminate stock from ATI but I have no idea how to go about finishing it. It needs some finish sanding but after that what is the best way to finish it with no drips?  What is the best clear coat to use for a nice shiny finish?

Congrats, but I hope you meant GSI!! ;D Hang in there, I don't have the patience to finish a fine stock like you have, but there are plenty here that do. ;)

NLD,
It is hard to beat Tru Oil for a good finish. I have done several
stocks with it and they all turned out good.

+1 on the Tru Oil.

The trick is putting on light coats, and allowing each to dry, and do very light sanding or steel wool between coats.

Find a well ventilated dust free area to work, and have a coat hanger handy to hang it out to dry.

I use my finger to do this, and use a circular motion to rub it into the grain, and apply it pretty fast, and go back over it making sure it's spread even, and with no runs.

You do it that way and you will have a deep, run free finish that will look deep, and enhance the grain of the wood!

So I want to thank all of you for your help with the stock. I used tru-oil like you guys suggested and I think it turned out rather well for my first one. I will get some pictures posted when I get a chance. It will be a couple of days yet.

now there is a stock finisher, i keep hearing guts talk about it taking weeks and 10-15 coats
here is a guy can do it in 2 day, thought so.

The type of finish used and wood prep can have a LOT to do with it.
Many of the poly's on the market dry very quickly and can be quite durable.
Good quality traditional finishes like (pure) linseed oil can take even a few days for a single coat to dry...but often look much deeper and more brilliant.

Generally, the difference between the two can be nearly night and day. Of course, one method is better than another depending on what you plan to use the wood for. ;)
