+1 on the Tru Oil.
The trick is putting on light coats, and allowing each to dry, and do very light sanding or steel wool between coats.
Find a well ventilated dust free area to work, and have a coat hanger handy to hang it out to dry.
I use my finger to do this, and use a circular motion to rub it into the grain, and apply it pretty fast, and go back over it making sure it's spread even, and with no runs.
You do it that way and you will have a deep, run free finish that will look deep, and enhance the grain of the wood!
