Info on Golden State Arms Mauser
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:17:20 AM »
A Friend picked up a 270 Win. @ a Show. It is a Mauser Action with a Slide safety behind the bolt. The Stock seems to be American Walnut with a Cheekpiece. Under the Barrel it says - Golden State Arms, Pasadena, Ca.. On the rear tang it says - Spain. Does anyone have any info on these Rifles?

Hmmm is there any markings on top of the barrel?

Under the barrel, you'll have to remove the stock to check, it there any markings like cartridge, lenght and a BNP with something like 20 Tons?

The Spain on the tang indicates it's a Santa Barbra action which were commercially available. Parker-Hale of Birmingham England also used Santa Barbra actions on some of their rifles. Photos would help.

Golden State Arms was one of the first importers of what were later variously marketed under the names Santa Barbara, Interarms Mark X, etc, etc.

Some of the early ones were said to have had an overly soft heat treating, so I'd take it easy with regards to max handloads.  Most factory loads should be OK, except for the Hornady Mags & other specialty loads.

Thanks - I'll see about a Picture. I don't think that there are any other Markings except what I Posted. We were thinking that it was either a Parker Hale or The old Herters, If I remember, The Herters was Marketed as J9 or U9, But I would think that this would be Stamped.

The Herters U9 was made for them by BSA of Birmingham and was not a Mauser action but a BSA design later with slight improvements and better finish sold by BSA as their High power range. For one thing the trigger releases the bolt so it does not have the Mauser bolt stop and release on the left side of the action. The actions of the U9 were supplied by BSA with only the first rough polish leaving Herters to finish black and fit the barrels and stocks. However it seems that Herters just blacked (blued) them without the final polish.

If it was a Parker Hale it would be roll marked on the barrel so and bear British Proof marks, actually Birmingham proof marks to be correct. These rifle were sold under the Santa barbra name in the US but as I ahve only seen the old 1960-70's adverts and not one of the actual rifles I cannot help with any markings they bear. Whitworth was a slo a British company who made rifles on mauser actions for sale in the US. Again the barrel is usually marked Whitworth Rifle Co.

There seems to be No other Markings . So I must assume that this is a Santa Barbara Action assembled by Golden State. The Stock - Who Knows, Bishop was popular back Then. I'm thinking this Rifle was on the Market in the early 70's. Never seen one.
