Ejector dropping when opening

I have a .25-06 barrel that is ejector model.  When you open the action, it will eject the cartridge fine...but when you go to resinsert a fresh round, the ejector has dropped down.  The new brass will actually chamber over top of the actual ejector and when the action is closed, the ejector is on the wrong side of it.

I bought this barrel second hand and suspect that there has been a history of something going on.  The face of the breech has a couple of marks that will allow you to use a small instrument behind the rim of the cartridge when it is chambered.

The other ejector barrel that I own is a .280 and its ejector does not drop after the action is opened nor does it have the grooves on the face of the breech.

As it sits now, it is almost impossible to chamber a round without partially closing the action to allow the ejector to go back into its proper place.

What do I have to replace to bring this back into proper working order?

The latch spring or button may be broken/missing, see the FAQs for pics of what should be in there. The notch is mentioned on Fred M's website and has been posted here, I have one on my 35 Rem and 280 Improved barrel, it's a modification to allow a pocket knife tip to remove a stuck case, beats a ramrod or dropping a drill bit down the barrel in the field. The chamber may have a defect in it that causes sticking brass too. A previous owner may have lost one of the parts when they worked on it too, you can order the parts from Brownell's and maybe H&R, I just ordered them from Brownell's recently for the extractor to ejector conversion.

It is working properly.
Open it up all the way and chamber a round.
When you close the gun the ejector will slide under the rim and into place.
I had a 30-06 ejector barrel and it worked the same way.

The marks on the breech may be from someone using some kind of tool to remove a stuck case from the chamber.

One if my .223s does that, but when closed it moves to the right location.  As long as it ejects when opened, I'm satisfied.  I don't use this gun for dangerous game, therefore I can live with it.

Nope, it won't go under the rim when it is closing.  I just checked it again.  As soon as you start to close the action, the ejector hits the breech face and pushes it upward and into what would be the proper location.  With an casing in the chamber, it hits the lower edge of the rim and fails to clear by approx .040" or so.

My .280 barrel doesn't drop like this one does so I suspect something else has failed.

I saw the remarks about the grooves on the rear of the barrel and realized what they were.
