41 Magnum
« on: January 01, 2008, 05:26:03 AM »
I have the chance to buy a Smith model 657-5 for $500, its used in about 95% . A nice stainless 41 mag . These are a current production gun and so am I correct to figure it has the lock ? Any thoughts out comments on this model ? This will be my first Smith but by no way is it my first hand gun .
Thanks

Buy it! You will love it! I would love to have a 41 Mag. Especially a Smith.
I want to get a 41 mag handgun to match my Marlin 1894S. Rugers are
OK, but nothing is as good as a Smith. Especially a stainless one!

I am a big fan of the 41 magnum cartridge, I have 2 a 6" 57 and a 657 Mountain Gun.  Both are extremely accurate, seem to shoot whatever you load into them with good accuracy, are managable to carry and shoot, and the cartridge is effective on game.  Gun hype aside, I seriously doubt that an animal could tell the difference between being shot with a 41 and a 44 given comparable load types, in other words comparing heavy for caliber hardcast bullets in both cartridges etc.  The 41 however is a reloaders cartridge in that it is kind of hard to find a large variety of ammo at the local gun shop, however this is less of a factor today than ever because of being able to have ammo shipped directly to you and the variety of specialty companies that load today.  If you are in the market for a handgun in the 41/44 class I think you will be pleased with the purchase.  I would like to have one of the 7.5 inch revolvers to go with my others but I just haven't found a resonably price one when I had the extra money.   Good shooting

Hello
The Model 657-4 was made in 1998 with the newer MIM style action and right after that I believe they came out with the Locks. I have had them, andf they are sometimes a smoother action than the Older Style actions. Good gun, will take lots of Magnum abuse.. Hammerdown

I'm a big .44 fan, but I found a 57 in great condition and bought it just because . . . it was something different. I love it. Found a very accurate load in the Winchester 240-gr. Platinum Tips, and like LEO said, no deer is gonna know the difference!

Get it, get it, get it! Or the rest of your life you'll say, "Dang I wish I had that .41. :o

Get it

I resisted for years, have 8 10mm's and kept telling myself don't need a 41. Also have 44mag and 454 so kept telling myself no fit for a 41. Bought a 4" 57 nickel, looked new in orig wooden presentation case, etc...
Loading for it and now kicking myself. No way to compare or try to fit with 10mm or anything else. It is just a great cartridge that stands alone as a must have

Oh, it sounds like a great price too
