just found this site and own a 223 ss handi
« on: December 31, 2007, 10:28:58 AM »
I read a few posts and decided to join.  I own a .223 stainless handi.  2 weekends ago I went shooting with my second box of hornady 40 grain vmax ammo (first box was moly second box wasn't).  I hadn't shot much paper with it, mostly just killed stuff with it, but i have a place to shoot 300 yards and wanted to try it.  First off the non moly coat bullets didn't hit anywhere near the moly coated ones (12 to 13 inches low on the first 3 shot group).  Next i adjusted the scope, but adjusted it like i was at 100 yds not 300 yds so the next 3 went way over the target!

Anyway on with the results shots 12, 13, and 14 were 3 1/8 inches followed by shots 15, 16, and 17 into 3 inches.  I believe with slower firing it could have been better as each time the 3rd shot took 1.5 inch 2 shot groups and made 3 inch 3 shot groups out of them! Not bad with factory ammo.

Well you got to love those handi's and I am glad I found this site.

Welcome aboard , my 223 Handi is my goto gun , i just love it but be warned switching back and forth with moly and non-moly bullets in a handi can be a bad thing without a good cleaning after the moly / been there / done that .  :o  If its a 1 in 12 twist barrel give the 55 grain V-max a try along with the 53 grain Sierra HPs .

Both shoot well in mine , with handloads .

Welcome sooperdooty. It sounds like you got a real shooter there. You must have a pretty steady eye yourself. What is your scope setup ?
There seems to be a lot of information on this site.
Good luck.

I am using an 8-32 power burris signature with 1/8 minute target knob adjustments.  It seems funny to have a gun where the scope costs twice what the rifle costs! not to mention that scope is over 20 inches long with the sunshade!  This scope enabled me to see the holes in the target without riding over there!  As far as cleaning goes all i do is spray a bore snake with rem oil and pull it through 4 or 5 times.  when i bought the gun I put 100 strokes of jb through it followed by 100 strokes of flitz metal polish.

sounds like you have a shooter , mine now wears a ATI collapsible stock stock to fit my oldest grandson for his first deer , but off the bench it is capable of 5 shot groups 1/2 inch or less at 100 yds it really likes 55 gr. ultramax never tried it at 300 yds , the only thing I did to it before I shot it was to polish the bore with mothers mag polish , about 1000 passes with a bore mop coated with the stuff , seams to work for me , old target shooter showed it to me have a happy new year jrhweldon

That is interesting, I never heard of the mag polish.  I got the jb and flitz from varmintal's website.  Sounds like the same philosophy ...break the barrel in before you shoot it.  I have used this technique on bolt actions as well as my ruger #1 international, but I just do it to make the cleaning easier ;)

I have created some 40 grain vmax handloads, but i have not tried them out yet, maybe this weekend ;D

mothers is not as abrasive as JB bore paste but it will make a bore look like a mirror if your arm doesn't fall off first , and it may all be in my head but it seams to work for me happy new year jrhweldon

I have also used Mothers mag polish with good results. It does take a lot of polishing, but the bore does not copper foul if you get enough strokes in.
