Puma 92 - can it shoot 44 special or 45lc?
« on: December 21, 2007, 04:58:20 AM »
I've been looking at these guns and noticed legacy sports states the caliber is 44mag.
They also state on their other gun it is 38/357 (both cartridges)

So can the puma shoot the 44 specials when chambered in a 44mag???

On another note, I know it's ok to shoot 45lc from some 454 revolvers.
What about a 45lc from a 454 Puma???

thanks all

I too would like to know.  Can the .454 Puma shoot .45 LC.  I would prefer this to the .44 Mag. since .454 is a little more powerful.

Can you? Sure. Should you? Maybe and maybe not.

The shorter rounds might or might not feed well in your gun and for sure will leave a crud ring at the end of the shorter case that many feel is a serious problem and others think not so serious. I've never used .44 Specials in a .44 Magnum or .45 Colt in a .454 Casull personally but have fired tons of .38 specials in .357 Magnum guns and never seen a problem from it. The chambers in these guns are not all that tight like in FA revolvers so personally I don't think the crud ring would be that much of a problem but the feeding issue could be.

In my M92 in .45 Colt that's all I shoot in it and I've not yet shot my M92 .357 Magnum even tho I've had it a couple years at least. I'll get around to it one of these days.

yes you can shoot the .45 colt in .454 casull model 92. I have found them to shoot rather well actually with a whole lot less recoil (even with the hot loads). The only difference is the point of impact. I have found that the .454's have a tendency to hit a few inches higher at 50 yards than do the colts.

I have a Navy Arms Model 92 Winchester clone in 357 mag, and have fired hundreds of 38 specials thru it with no ill effects. I have in the past fired 1000s of 38 specials thru 357 mag revolvers, and hundreds of 44 specials thru 44 mag revolvers and rifles, with out a hitch.
Some rifles will feed the shorter round with no problem and some will not. Just try them.

My 454 shoots 45 LC very Well, puts 250 gr XTP's over 25.7 H110 into  .440 at 50 yards (5 shot group, avg 1650 fps) with a williams peep off the bench. Also shoot Cast Lyman Devastators (weigh 202 as Cast) over 13 gr HS6 (1300 avg fps) into .760 at 50 yds. Both feed slick as green corn through a goose.

Yep I've shot plenty 45 LC through my Puma 454!  I can't comment on the 44mag/spec as I don't own one!

96Swede,

That first loading that you listed sounds like a really good one. How does it perform on deer? Hopefully when I get out in few months I will have the time to reload again. ;D

454/45LC?? Why bother.....If you re-load you can just load down the 454.  The 45 LC is safe to shoot, but as stated above it may score the chamber, maybe not.  Why take the chance.  If you dont re-load, I'm sure you can buy Cowboy Action loads to play with.  I know that my Puma 92 has a lot of recoil with my 454 reloads, but they do sell one in 45LC only.

Mainly because .454 brass is expensive at least in my area it is so it is cheaper to shoot the .45 LC but I don't make it a habit to shoot .45's in my .454. I shoot them out of my Winchester 94.
