22 -30 carbine

I found a cartridge at the range last week that was a 30 carbine case necked to .22.  I thought someone had made .221 fireball out of it but the dimensions are different.  What did someone make?    I remember that Iver Johnson or Universal necked 30 carbine to 25 caliber for a while but can't find that one in CTG's of the World either.

I remember reading about a wildcat 22/30 in one of P.O.Ackley's books. If I remember correctly, the gas system for the semi-auto operation would not function properly. I can't remember what they called it. If I can find my old book's. I will post the proper name.

The 22-.30 carb has been around for some years . case life , poor bullistics and the fact that some had to be loaded one round at a time made it a only so so choice .

What would it fit in as a bolt action?  Destroyer carbine or would a M77/22 Hornet work?  But then again he hornet would be a better choice from what you said.

You maybe talking about a 5.7 Johnson. I had one at one time. It was fun to shot. A 30 carbine neck down to 22 caliber. You needed a forming die to size down in steps. I used 25/30 carbine FL die to reduce the neck size 25 Cal. than used a 5.7 Johnson FL Die to form to 22 caliber.

Because a 222 Rem will not work in the M1 Carbine action.   The cartridge was created to convert THIS rifle to a shorter range, quick action varmint rifle.   Drawbacks are that brass is time consuming to make, with expensive dies, then the rifle throws it away where you can't find it.

One of the guys at our range has taken a 5 gallon cheapo depot bucket and cut a rifle rest into the left side and has lined it with 1/2 inch pipe insulation.  With the bucket inverted he shoots all of his autos.  the rounds eject fly up hit the bottom of the bucket and are collected on the bench.
This may be a way for you to keep you brass.
Do you want the one I found?  Do you want some 30 carbine brass?

I have a 22 Spitfire that I built on a CZ 527 22 Hornet.  The Spitfire is the same as the 5.7 Johnson except it has a slightly sharper shoulder.  I use it to hunt ground squirrels in Idaho and Montana.  The forming dies are from Redding and forming is done in two stages.  Power is kind of between my 22 K-Hornet and the 22 Fireball.  I shoot mine with the 35 gr. Hornady V-Max and 13.3 grs. of LilGun and get 3435 fps from the CZ 22" barrel.  I love the little rifle and it is a real rodent killer and likes to shoot those little groups we all like to see.

LOL cool.  I really like the CZ guns.  Do you want the piece of brass for any reason.  Could you use some 30 carbine brass if I find it in the big bin of brass?

Thanks for the offer of the brass.  All my brass is matched and I purchased 400 rds when I build the rifle.  That should last me a very long time.
