I too made a sling when I was a kid and was astounded at the power you could impart into a golf ball sized rock.

It all came about when reading a book about the Incas and how they fought the Spanish (to a stand still) using slings - while the Spanish were using blunderbuss. "A sling-shot?" sez I. Later on, there was a minimal discussion about the sling they were using. Grabbing two lengths of rope (one of which was tied around the wrist) and a piece of canvas, I had a sling that would easily chuck a rock 100 yards. I never got good at accuracy, but I sure could send them downrange. (The Incas would mass a bunch of sling throwers and through sheer volume, achieved their objective.)

So, is a sling adequate for deer? I think so.

(But I think for the time being, I'll stick to my 20 ga Handi.)

A slingshot for deer?

I took a nice plastic buck last year with this one http://

He didn't run but the vital insert fell out and he fell. Good penetration and the ballistics were great because I used a premium river rock!! Didn't expand well though. I found it in the windshield of the neighbors car too! No I don't think anyone should really do this its stupid and illegal but I am sure you could kill a deer with one.

Hey if it is legal ethical and moral? I suppose even a cave man could have done it..... Of course shot placement is everything.... Some might think a head shot is lethal....

Supposedly (I got this via e-mail) another hunter found this guy out wondering around with this arrow in his head…. Once another guy shot a buck right between the eyes with a 270….. He said hmm must have scared him to death, didn’t see a bullet hole… Grabbed him by the horns and the buck jumped to his feet and ran off never to be seen again… A few lessons can be learned there…. Angle of the head and bullet must have recherché off???

I guess for me and becoming an ethical hunter I have learned from others mistakes and successes and also learning my own capabilities before getting out in the field….

I just returned from Alberta on a moose hunt. I took a nice bull with a cats eye marble in my sling shot. A pass through at 30 yards. He ran 10 yards and piled up. I am thinking a sling shot is going to become my weapon of choice. Light compact and mans do they knock animals flat.

Slingshots are more than adequate for deer, BUT deer have gotten really tough to kill lately what with their newly evolved kevlar reinforced hide.

So in order to kill modern super cyber mecha deer you need to use a Ultra long action beltless magnum slingshot launching rocks weighing at least a metric ton. Like the example pictured below.

Just be careful to not develop a flinch from shooting the thing

How good are you with that sling shot? Can you hit a deer at 100 yds with it. Or even 25yds. I know I couldn't.

As posted by others shot placement is key.
my sling shot shots better than store bought as it is a custom made target model.
you could say it is a wildcat slingshot.
it has 7" long bands that will stretch to 23" with a custom goat skin ammo holder
with a pistol grip release.and they are stress relieved and mounted true on the risers.
with a free floating grip and a 6x24 Burris scope,rings,mounts.
I also have the mag5 wrist pad installed on it.
this will shoot 48 grain round ball hollow points at 3400 fps.
If I do my part this baby will shoot 3/4" groups at 400 yards and all shots in one
hole at 100 yards. If you shoot deer shot placement is key as these are very explosive loads
and meat damage can be great. on fox etc it will put about a 3" entrance hole with like a 12"
exit hole. wood chuck crows etc they just vaporize.
remember to check your slingshot load manual before doing any loads other than stock marbel loads.
above load I listed is MAX for my unit , be sure to start low and work up to these.
if you start to get exessive slap back from your bands you are at max load.

Hey yall have got me interested but as I have said before I am recoil shy... I know i know I am a wuss but I was looking at something at least able to shoot 25 to 30 cal marbles/rocks. Now I have heard of the Sims WRISTSAVER pad have any of yall had any experience with this and is it worth it for the high price. Oh yea Barnes made a solid TSX round ball that they swear will penetrate further than other round ball. But I warn you you must load these 1/2 in off the leather... pressures are higher than jacketed balls. let me know what you think.

I must say when I read the title to this post , I got a chuckle and right away had to see what it was all about.
When I was a boy back in the early 1960 s you could buy a Wham O slingshot that included a wire arrow rest that lay across the wooden slingshot handle and fit into the cuts made for the rubber slings. On the package they listed deer as a possible game animal that could be hunted with this arrow attachment. As a kid I thought that would really be cool to take a deer with a slingshot since I have taken birds, squirrels , and a few groundhogs shooting big 3/4 glass marbles.
I have seen a deer cleanly killed with a kids solid fiberglass 30 lb. bow with a wood arrow and a two blade Bear broadhead.
So I believe it is possible. Jed

However, the key to taking big game with a slingshot is the size of your balls.

Since I did read all of this I may as well add something to waste more of somebody else's time...

If you turn your bow sideways, grab the sight with your hand and shoot it as such, that is pretty much a large game slingshot.
Maybe a stabilizer that comes out the side to hold onto.... We could be onto something!!

Let's call ruger! We could call it the... 22" RCMB (ruger compact magnum bolt) We'll all be millionaires by morning!!

What really matter is the weight retention and expansion. Also how many FPS you are pushing them at. Then you need to figure out at what ranges you are shooting at as 10 feet is your longest range and you need a long range scope to go with it then you can reach out there and touch them. If you are hunting dangerous game you need to remember you need a heavy grain bullet.

30-06 man ... what are these ummm bullets you speak of. I mean I am an avid slinger. The only projectiles i know of for slingshot are rocks marbles and if you make enough money bolts and arrows or the occasional lead ball. I think you must be in the wrong thread I have heard of something like those bullets in the wussy rifle gun threads. Just so you know this is a serious topic so please sta on subject we dont want anyone confused here.

lead. You will need something like .50 or better, which also means you will
need to pick on another board, like ML or big bore rifle!
