20 GA Tracker II mount/scope flew off?
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:39:52 AM »
I have a Tracker II 20GA that is a little over 2 years old.  I bought it mostly as my son's slug gun fully rifled and alot easier to carry than the USH.  I also have a stainless .50 ML barrel w/ peep sights for Co. elk hunt in future.

I had the Tracker II drilled and tapped for a factory or weaver scope mount.  I have a Tasco Red Dot mounted on it.  First year it was shooting loose.  Took it back to Gun Smith.  He took some off screw, it was bottoming out before it was tight.

Well checking zero this year and it flies off. hitting son in forehead.  He is fine, hardheaded like his Dad.

It appears not enough threads were holding.  Now what to do-after deer season?
New screws, shortened and locktight?
Bigger screws, new larger holes drilled and tapped, mount holes drilled out and lock tight?
Should Gun smith cut me a break since he did it to start with?
Looking for help.

I had a regular 20 gauge Pardner barrel drilled and tapped and I have not had any problems with it. I shoot only slugs through it and no sign of coming loose. I would ask the gunsmith to fix the problem for free as he is the one who did the work originally.

Yup, the smith should fix it, any way you look at it, if he did good work to begin with, you wouldn't have had problems with it, likely the original screws that were too long caused the mount holes to be damaged when they were working loose, wallowed the holes out.  ;)

Since you are doing a 20 gauge you have plenty of thickness for the gunsmith to work with. When my smith was doing 12 gauges (I have 2 12 guages with scopes with no problems whatsoever (a Tracker I and a Tracker II), what he did was use the next size up screw and re-did the holes in the H&R scope rails to accommodate them, after he D&T'ed the holes he used a flat bottoming tap to thread the holes all the way to the bottom, made sure the screws were exactly the correct length to reach ONLY to the bottom of the hole and flat filed the ends of the mounting screws to the exact length. He used blue loc-tite on the screws and 2 part epoxy between the cleaned and degreased chamber area and the scope rail. These are not going to go anywhere. The same procedure can and should be used with 20 gauges if he is willing. If he wants to keep the mounting holes/screws the same size as the originals I would think to added length he could use on a 20 gauge should make those screws sufficient, IF he used some 2 part epoxy between the scope rail and mounting area over the chamber, and blue (or correctly purple) loc-tite on the screws. Be careful no epoxy gets in or even near the mounting screws and the screw holes....<><....:)

Thanks for your ideas.  I will take it back to the smith that did it after deer season is over.
I think I do want the next size up screws to feel good about it.
I don't mind paying for screws, but do not feel I should have to pay drill and tap fee, approx. $50.
Thanks  IL Hunter

The position of the screws is already determined on the barrel, it looks like about 20-30 minutes of work to me to re-do it with larger screws and to redo the scope rail to those larger size screws. That and the cost of the screws is minimal, mostly labor. I think the gunsmith should cover it for good will. The screws are something he should have in stock by the box full or in his "left over" and "odds and ends" box His cost should be under a dollar for the screws. Perhaps he could do the machine work and you could do the mounting of the rail if that helped with getting the job redone so the rail stays in place, however I would think he would prefer to do the complete job himself if he was to stand behind it....<><....:)

not necessarily, he had a problem and the gunsmith may stand behind his work. This was just a discussion of suggestions on what might happen and how the job has been successfully done in the past on other members guns, and about the best way to make sure the problem dies not happen again....<><....:)

ILHunter...Have you talked to your gunsmith yet?  I'm curious if he is going to stand behind his work.
