There's wisdom there. I have very high praise for the Mossberg pump. When I compared the Mossberg to the 870, the Mossberg won because it has a tang safety and my son is left-handed, so the tang safety is a better choice. It's been a great gun.

Isn't controversy great? I started this thread out of frustration with what's available in a new shotgun and the price of same. Somebody likes everything and somebody doesn't. I can sell my new purchases at a profit; but, I won't. I can sell my repaired AL390 at a profit; but, I won't.

If I were in the military, it'd be a pump or not a shotgun. My son bought a Ruger 10-22 at Wally Mart and it went back for so long they refunded his money, which is not their policy. No Walmart guns for me. As far as doubles go, I didn't pay a heck of a lot for a very nice gun and the reliability of a double is much older than a pump.  As far as I am concerned my issue has been fully addressed and my problems solved to my great satisfaction. I hate it when my satisfaction gets upset.

As prior posts state, I do love a good laugh. Like the esteemed members who decided that I don't need to shop at Walmart, I'm young and a new shooter.... I never mentioned Walmart, age or experience. I just got advised to pay more for the move up to quality and my inexperience was pointed out.  Excuse me, I got to laugh again!

If you got a bad 10-22 at Walmart it was Ruger's fault not Walmart's.  They are exactly the same guns the gun stores sell.

Chucky52:

Now that you're on board with my ideas, just send me your Berettas and I'll give you a brand new gen-yoo-wine Walmart 870 in fair exchange. That way both of us will be happy.

The gunsmith did an incredible job on the split stock. I can barely find it and I new where it is. I did not know that a split stock could be repaired so well and for less than half the cost of a new stock which wouldn't match, anyway.

I have a Wingmaster which I will not part with and I will Keep the Berettas. Thanks for the offer; but, if I don't like them, I have boys that will.

Winchester is gone and to be honest, one of the finest shotguns I know of is the model 23. Good luck finding one! The model 23 was discontinued in 1987.

Now the question is, can you afford it young fella?  LOL

I have an 870 that the stock cracked , i have a Parker that was made in 1897 and it is as tight as the day it was built , no cracked wood !
i have seen several worn out 870's ( i know this bust alot of bubbles , SORRY )
seen Mossbergs and Winchester mod. 12's shot loose also !
when the market is flooded and the advertising hype is piled on many jump on the band wagon !
I own several 870's , and like them alot , but facts must be faced a double is 2 guns and that alone adds to strength !
you can't use shell adapters in a pump !
if the 870 was so great why does the military use Mossberg ? now and Steven's in Viet Nam ?
no you can bet all guns will break !
have you ever seen action bars break , they do on an 870 most of the time it will keep working if the broken one can be removed , try that on the highly praised model 12 !
New york city used Steven's 311's for their police shot guns not pumps maybe they still do ! hard to short stroke a SXS !
if you have opportunity go to a store that sells guns to police departments and see if they have any 870 trade ins , you will see 870's in every state of misuse and abuse  some will not work , some can't be fixed and to be fair some have been thru. 20 years of neglect and do work !
point is no one gun does it all , no one price no matter how cheap fills the bill !
I also like guns other than a pump and reall don't care for golf !
as far as cash lay out , might as well have the best - YA CAN"T TAKE IT WITH YA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Ok, if 55 is young, I may be able to retire at a reasonable age. If not I will be shopping at Wally World and eating dog food.

The U S govt./military  buy from the lowest bidder

My guns are not abused or neglected.

Statistics dictate that if you make 6,000,000 + 870s, some of them will fail and others will be abused and neglected.

Who has the time or money or golf.

I barely have time to shoot and not enough of that.

I live with fear everyday and sometimes she let's me hunt!

Hi All,

     Ahhh I read this :-

Quote

Well the reason as to why the wood is good is that they used quality Air Dried timber and not the rubbishy Kiln Dried stuff we get now. Got to worship the "Great God Excessive Profit" you know  >:(

Overwhelmed with price and underwhelmed with selection. After what I've been thru, I looked at new guns with a serious price tags and figured a lot of materials are cheaper with some or all made in China. Couldn't part with my $ for the lower end stuff and thought I would be nuts to drop a couple of thousand for the premier new guns and picked up an 8-10 year old Beretta for less than it sold for new 8 or 10 years ago. It did take some hard shopping for that deal.
