mine only smokes when starting it up or turning it off. also if you accelerate extremely fast

Hmmm never had a diesel truck but ran diesel powered cars for about 12 years. Both were Citroen's BX Model the last was a 93 and I would still be driving it except for a nurd in a white van wrote it off for me  :'( now I have a Cherokee 4.0. Anyway if a diesel smokes on anything but very hard acceleration of a very cold start up the injectors need looking at. I put injection cleaner through it (added to the tank) about twice a year, changed the oil every 6,000 miles however I only changed the fuel filter a couple of times in the 9 years I ran the car. The 1.7L turbo diesel returned around 55mpg on average (imperial gallon = 4.54litres).

   I think diesel is dearer because diesel engines are more efficient and the oil companies have increased the price so they don't lose out as until they got popular here it was always cheaper but once more diesel powered cars were on the roads it crept up past petrol. It's pure greed nothing more   :-[.

If you will look at the taxes per gallon on diesel versus gasoline I think you will understand better why diesel costs more per gallon. Also diesel has been cheaper to refine than gasoline in the past, but with the newer requirements for cleaner burning diesel that margin is closing fast, not to mention that diesel is in much lower demand than gasoline in the US. Supply and demand would seem to play a part in what is produced and sold, but then again conspiracies and greed are easy to fall back on when we don't know all of the facts.

off road diesel is expensive now. i try to run the tractor that runs off gas more now even though its not as strong

Dyed diesel has definitely gone up along with every other fuel. I drive a 93 cummins dodge and am paying over $3.00 a gallon now for diesel for on road use. With oil trading at $90 plus a barrel it is not going to get better anytime soon.

While I was filling up this morning on $3.18 E-10 I saw diesel at $3.58.  If this keeps going up Christmas may be a little bleak this year...

I love my trucks, an old I-6 bronco and a chev.  But I like to get out.  I live in the country and can hunt and fish all the time.
That is why I am going back to when I was really poor (as a teen) and getting a beat up old front wheel drive car to hunt in.  My partner has an old VW gas rabbit that gets around 40mpg.  Sure its cramped and not so nice but this gas thing is going to get worse before it gets better.  And we carry chains and surprisingly if we don't get high centered we seem to get along fine. 

The only good thing I can say about the price of gas going up is there are far less hunters around.

Other than having more land to choose from hows it good. that means some may get out of the sport which isn't good. diesel here is still $3.10 at flying j's

Depends what ya pull if you need a diesel or not. Need is a relative term however and diesels make me smile! Had a Dakota 4WD quad cab with 4.7 and tow package. Got 7.2 MPG towing my big pontoon boat. My 2005 dodge 2500 CTD gets 19.9MPG unloaded @ 75MPH and 15MPG pulling my boat. Was well worth my money to go diesel!
