17 mach 2 sportster firing pin issue

It does not hit hard enough. No it is not me and the trigger. With the trigger fully depressed and the hammer lowered, the firing pin comes out a small bit. With the trigger remaining depressed fully, I pull the hammer back and push the transfer  bar in by hand and the firing pin comes out a bit further than with the hammer.Looks like a short firng pin or the hammer is being stopped before full travel. Is this thing going to have to be returned? Hopefully there is a fix I can do. I get one succesful fire from about ten rounds no matter the ammo. The ammo in question is then fired from my 10-17 and it shoots just fine. Anybody have a simple solution??

The best thing to do is return it to H&R, the Sportsters seem to be notorious for this problem. Contact H&R and ask them to cover shipping, toll free (866)776-9292. You may be able to fix it using Fred M's recommendations, although his is for a centerfire, should be close enough, it would require and entire R&R of the trigger group, click his website in his profile, Perklo's trigger R&R can be found in the FAQs.

Well I got looking things over tonite and decided to try and fix it myself. I ended up taking the hammer out and took some  off the hammer face that makes contact with the reciever. Took some doing but it worked. Now the hammer comes forward enough on the firing pin and  fires every round. Happy camper once again.

You might order a spare lifter and striker(transfer bar), the increased hammer strike pressure may break it. They've been known to break on their own and I've always recommend to keep a spare on hand anyway, knowing Murphy is always hanging around, it won't hurt.

I think I will do just that and thanks for the tip. Are all transfer bars the same size?? I have not taken them out of any of the guns ( I did not need to) and hope it is not that bad to do. SO FAR..... I have a 30-06,223,204 and this 17 mach 2 in NEF.

As far as I know, they're all the same, I got my spare from Brownell's. H&R's part number is S02043 $10.30.
