Which gun for 1st hunt of 2007?
« on: October 01, 2007, 07:06:02 AM »
The threads have seemed kinda slow to me, and then I remembered that deer/gun season is right around the corner, so I image that many of us have been at the range getting our guns sighted in, gone scouting, etc.

So, what gun will you be using on your first deer hunt this year?

I will be using my trusty handloaded .280 in a Ruger M77 II with 140 gr Sierra Gamekings (If I don't pick up some Accubonds and try them 1st!)

Remington 700 ADL in 270 Winchester running 130 grain Winchester Silvertips (factory).  It shoots just under 1" 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

I'll be using my 280 Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with 140 grain Accubonds. This load dropped a pig last year and the rifle is a fine carry gun.

Looks like I will be forced to use my Remington 700   243. I think I will try 100 grain Remington Corelocks. If you guys have another suggestion on ammo I am all ears. If I am lucky enough I will be able to buy a more suitable deer rifle before deer season. Dale

Been working on it for over a year - Rebarreled Vz-24 Mauser to a 9.3x62.  Just finished working up a reload and got her sighted-in this last weekend.

I will be using my new Remington 700xcr in 270wsm with a Burris Euro-Diamond 2.5x10x44mm with the Ballistic Plex. Using factory 150gr. Winchester Power-Point ammo for my deer and elk this year.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr

If I weren't recovering (again) from surgery, and therefore if my mule deer tag weren't (again ... sense the dismal frustration?) going to waste, I would be using my Ruger Hawkeye 7mm-08 or my Winchester M70 Featherweight 7mm WSM, depending on what my scouting would show.  139 grain Hndy BTSP's would be the order of the day.

AND, for the coinciding javelina tag that too is going to go unused, either the Marlin
30-30 or my 44 mag Ruger SBH.

Thanks for letting me fantasize guys.  This is going to be a very long fall & winter. :'( :'( :'(

remington sps 7-08 with Nikon Monarch 2X7. Shoots 1 1/2' groups at 100 yds with remington greenies.
Once in a while I'll take my 50 year old Win 94 30-30-still shoots as good as when my dad gave it to me 50 years ago.

I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

I do believe I'll be trying my Stevens 200 in 25-06 rem with Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 on it.  It has yet to draw blood.  Handloads with 117 Hor seem to have promise.

People ! No 6.5x55 ! No .260 !

I recently picked up a Rem Model 7 CDL in .260 Remington so it is a definite possibility for me if I am able to get out this season. I've only been out twice in the past three seasons but am hoping to be able to find away to get out this season at least a time or two. I have more possible guns to use than days I'll hunt I'm sure but I am hoping to be able to get the .260 ready and see how I'll like it.

What powder are you using? I've got about all of them and lots of those bullets. I'm thinking of settling down with that bullet or the Nosler 125 PT or 130 AB most likely for mine assuming that works out accuracy wise.

I have it narrowed to my 25-06 for fields, or my 1903 springfield 30-06 or VZ-24 35 Whelen for mixed areas.  If I hunt woods, I might use my Swiss K-31 with scout scope.

My wife will use her 44 mag Handi or m96 Swede, depending on where we hunt.

30.06 Remington 700 adl shooting 150grain Federal fusions or my encore .45cal muzzle loader with 195 grain powerbelt areo tips and 100 grains of triple seven .. can't make up my mind. thought about the encore 30.06 also but i don't need a 250 yard gun in the brush.

I'm a big fan of the 308 but this year I plan to use my 284 Win. I bought an A-Bolt Medallion in 284 win a year or so ago in mint condition. It came with a bunch of ammo & even though I reload I'll just use the 150 grn win factory rounds. It has a 20" barrel & a vari-x-1.75-6 scope.

Well as of the past Sunday, I will be using the New Rem. Titanium 700 in 7-08 however I really have been busy this year and havent worked out a load for it yet, however it does a excelent job with both of the Remington factory loads I have tried the 120 H.P. and the 140 S.P. have used both with great success in the Rem. model 7 in the same Cal. sitting in the safe,  decisions / decisions there are several favorites to choose from but the NEW one will get it debut this season.   JIM

Please let me know how the 120gr performs. I shot a couple (6) 120gr hot cores the previous weekend - too slow - 2200fps, but oh my !! 4 into one ragged hole,  one pulled one and the other one just 1/2 an inch away.

Enjoy the hunt.

257 weatherby with a Ziess 3.5x10  for Fields and A bolt 7mm mag with a 3x9 Leupold Varix 3 for woods. Boy is it tough to decide. Of course we can use a 45/70 during primitive arms season so my Buffalo Classic will hunt as well.

I am hoping to be able to get the .260 ready and see how I'll like it.

Just remeber, there is no cure for the 6.5 disease! And the .260 will be soft on the shoulder.
