Anyone familiar with Savage/Stevens model 511 sxs?
« on: September 26, 2007, 01:52:30 PM »
This past weekend I ran across a near mint Stevens/Savage model 511 20 gauge SxS at a local gun shop. It says Westfield Mass on the receiver. The lockup is tight and the action lever stays to the right.

What is everyone's opinions on these, are they any good?

What years were these built? The shop owner claims it was made in the late 50's early 60's.

He's asking $399 for it. Is this a fair price or too steep?

Savage didn't move production facilities to Westfield from Chicopee Falls until after 1960, and the only SxS's in the 1959 price list were the Fox B & the Stevens 311.

Steep, by at least $50, JMO.  It's possible the dealer left himself some dickerin' room.

Thanks for the reply.

Are these good shooters? I'm looking for something to take partridge hunting and for occasional informal trap shooting.
I shouldered it and it seemed to fit nice.

It depends on choke & barrel length - your needs seem at odds with themselves, as Patridge hunting is usually a close-range, open choke affair (in my experiences) usually with a short-barreled gun; and Trap shooting usually involves a long-barreled, full or modified choked gun to reliably track & break clay pigeons.

Patridge hunting and Skeet or Target Clays shooting are most compatible with each other - both for conditions & equipment.

You're right about being at odds. It's tough to do everything with just one gun.
