Mossberg 100ATR ?
« on: September 25, 2007, 04:43:38 AM »
I have been looking at the Mossberg line of bolt action rifles in .308 and decided to purchase one. I have not yet fired it but I have scoped it with a nice nikon scope. I was just wanting to know if any one else has gotten one and used it yet and what they thought of it?
Thanks!

I have one in .270 and like it. Have not shot it a lot, but it will be the first rifle I hunt with this year. It is my newest rifle. I don't reload, so use factory Winchester SP's and they group about 1-1/2" at 100 yds. Mine is the synthetic stock with the built in swivel mounts and I have managed to break both of them while sighting it in. They are fragile. If I had paid attention to what I was doing, they probably would have been fine. Just screwed in some regular studs and kept on going. Will probably buy another in 30-06 this year to replace a single shot.

I have a Mossberg 100 ATR in 30-06 with a 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmasters scope.  I think you will like your ATR in .308.  I would have purchased the .308 version, but it was not on the market when I bought my ATR.

Earlier this month on a hunting trip to Montana, I used the ATR to shoot a buck antelope at 201 yds (lasered).  The shot hit the very back of the left front shoulder and exited the right side of the rib cage for an instant kill.

The ATR has given me excellent accuracy with 150 gr factory loads (two shot groups in the half inch range).

I have been so pleased with my ATR, I am considering purchasing either an ATR in .243 or a similar Mossberg 4x4 rifle in .270 (because of the 24" barrel on the 4X4).

This rifle is underrated.  Mossberg should spend some money promoting it.

Congratulation on bagging the antelope.

I couldn't agree more.  This rifle is underrated.

I've had a .30-06 since they first arrived on the market and have since purchased a .308 with the walnut stock (still have not shot it yet!). A buddy recently purchased an ATR .243 package deal with the Mossberg scope.  Like the .30-06, it too is a tack driver.  The actions are smooth, the triggers are decent and they are far more accurate than anyone would expect a $250 bolt gun to be.  I'm also considering another in either .270 or .243.  Just can't make up my mind which one.  I'm also holding out hope that Mossberg will introduce the ATR in a .223; .22-250 or perhaps in .25-06.  I've not warmed to the 4X4's forend shape.   :)

I have a 270 ATR, 1 1/2" groups, like it a lot. Prefer my Steven 200's  though.

I also bought a .270 when they came out.  It has shot the Fusion 130 grain ammo consistently into 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards, and has taken three deer on three shots over the last two seasons.  It shoots better with handloads, but, then again, so does every rifle I own.

I personally love it for what it is: an accurate, reliable, inexpensive rifle that I am not worried about when I am dragging it up a tree on a rope behind me when hunting from a stand.  It is a tool, and it does it's job just fine by me.

I topped mine with a 4.75x fixed Weaver Grand Slam scope in Warne mounts.
