225 Handi
« on: September 24, 2007, 04:59:16 AM »
As I am the grasshopper and you are the master...I have a few questions. I know we talked a little about this before but it just keeps coming back into my mind. I want a 225Winchester in a handi .How would you stub and what would you use for components ,can I take and have a handi lug welded to some other 225 bbl then work a 357 ejector/extractor on that lug. Would it make much difference in bbl length say 22' 24' 26' as I would like to have a bbl that will shoot 2" or less at 3-400 yrds when finished. What would the reasons be for me not to be able to take a encore bbl an have a handi lug welded to it? I will be reloading for this bbl. Kurt

The new 223 barrels are a 1 - 9" twist rate. New 22 Hornet barrels are a 1 - 12" twist rate. Depending on what bullet you wanted to shoot would be my determining factor on which barrel to use. I do not have a book near to tell, but I think the 225 is longer than a 223 in the body section, I know it of a larger diameter, so it should work. Ejectors/extractors can be changed out to a size that suits the purpose. I believe if you get a new barrel it will have an extractor. You may look into getting an older barrel to do, in stead of a new one. A older 223 has an ectector and 1 - 12" twist rate. Reaming a chamber would be the cheapest way to go. Good luck to you. ;D

ONE HOLE 4570 had a 223 bull barrel rechambered to 225...

As for welding a donor underlug to another barrel, I'd suggest that be done to a blank or smaller chambered donor as welding on a prechambered 225 Win barrel wouldn't do the chamber specs much good. I have a 6.5mm Shilen match blank at my gunsmith's right now have an underlug welded to it to become a 6.5x55, he's pretty confident that it will work fine. ;)

I guess one of my concerns with using a Hornet bbl is the longest I can get is 22" . I have a 22"bull 1-9 223 that I have been able to shoot 69gr match king bullets out of and my pet load for the same bbl is 55vmax IMR3031. I think I would rather go with a 24" bull or fluted but know they are 1-9" all the original .225 stuff was 1-14". Shooting times tested this round in June of 1964 and the factory loaded ammo was 55bullet at3590fps and psi of49,966 all their hand loaded stuff was 45-55 speers and 12 powders with none of them going above 49,400 psi. and probably what I would start with would be 3031 31grn 3530fps 45,500 psi. I have a 204 so the 223 could be turned into a 225 leaving no gap in calibers. but there is a great distance between 1-9" and 1-14" not sure what to do. The other option might be to order whole gun in 22hornet at 22" long also there was the other guy who was not sure if the hornet bbl with ejector needed any work other than reaming anyone know of this. thanks to all Kurt

;) The 225 Win was brought out to replace the 220 Swift which had a 1-14 twist. Why change? The rim diameter is .473"nom. as the 30-06 is. Production expediency is the game here. The original 22 Hornets were on 1-16 twist barrels and now 1-12 and they are not affected by over stabilization. There are so many variables in the twist formula that it is more bathroom reading material then practical facts. Not many 220 Swifts would stabilize the 60 gr bullets in the 60's, but 400yd shots with a 55gr was easy enough at 3650 to 3800 fps.

That's the plan Digger. I guess what I will do is take my 22"bull .223 1-9"twist and have it done that will be the cheapest way and hopefully I can get the 55grnr's to stabilize at 3600+fps if not I'll just have to slow them down and be stuck with a powder burner case but I think it's worth a shot.
