you will like the new savage rifles. actions are smooth, finish is good, and accuracy out of the box the best in the business. i have 2 new savages and i gotta say they are 2 of the best gun buys i have ever made.

They haven't been "cheap" in a long time. In fact those I've seen on the shelves at my local gunshop the last year or two have price tags HIGHER than the average Remington on the same shelves. But they are still UGLY.

I have a Remington 700 BDL VS and it is a very nice rifle. It is polished, the fit and finish was good it has a very nice walnut stock with cut checkering, and other nice touches. It is truly a very nice rifle. People for the most part when they bought a Savage, they bought one of their lower cost ones. People then compare a low cost Savage to the higher priced gun and say it does not compare, and they did not either as far as looks. When people wanted a better grade of bolt gun in general they did not look at a Savage, they looked else where. That is starting to change. Savage has had a good rep for accuracy for some time and people are starting to buy the better grade Savages. As people buy the better grade guns, Savage keeps raising the bar in the quality of the stocks, finish etc. When you buy a better grade Savage gun, it is not cheap either. Their new target single shots are in the $1000 range. I have 2 Stevens 200's. They are at the bottom of the heap for looks and quality of finish etc. Some of them have had feeding issues and other problems. But again they ARE a cheap gun. I have modified them quite a bit, because they were cheap looking, but also because I like to work/tinker with guns. They have to be the easiest guns to work on there is. I would really hate to mess up my Remington, but the Stevens I have no problem with. They are good shooters and do not look too bad now either. ;D

GB is like I was for years.  All I knew was Browning and no other rifle would EVER go in my safe.  I found that I was in error.  There are many guns and I hope to have many to take to the range.  The engineering of a rifle is what I look for and not how pretty it is.  Pretty has no place on the range.  If the gun will shoot well then it is the gun for me.

I am now a new owner of a Model 14 classic in 7mm -08.  Fit and finish is as good as any rifle I own.  I have Sako, Tikka, Marlin, Browning, CZ and now Savage.

I have not had the time to work up a load but hope to shoot this weekend!!!

GB,

I don't know where you shop but where I do the Rem are quite a bit higher than the Savages.  If you compare a CDL to a 14Amer Classic you find about a $200 difference in both retail and selling prices with the Rems the higher.  The price difference between a BDL and Amer Classic is about the same.  I have seen new SPS rifles priced higher than the Savage 14 Amer classic.  Just so you know I don't own any Savages at this time although I have in the past but I do own a CDL.  If I was to choose to buy another new rifle I probably choose the Savage Amer Classic over the CDL for the price and I also think it is a better looking rifle.
Good Shooting,
George

I have an old Model 110 B Savage in .270 that shoots like guided with a laser...the buck it put down never asked me why it wasn't a Remington.

Funny, two of the rifles I do not own are Remingtons,Winchester, or Ruger bolt actions. I have a Browning A bolt  in .280 which shoots like the above Savage. I think the Savage is very well engineered, albeit a little heavy in the stock and long in the barrel (26"). My other bolt actions are all Mausers. Not saying the Remingtons and of course the vaunted pre-64 M70 aren't great rifles..could never get over the pricing. I am seriously thinking of the model 14 American Classic savage thought. It is a pretty rifle by anyone's standards.

Accuracy has always been Savage's trademark not their looks, but I have to admit that their looks are getting better.  I also agree that they aren't cheap anymore.  I just picked up a 12BVSS 223 for $715 out the door.  That's not a cheap rifle to me, but it has the laminated stock and I couldn't be any more impressed with it.  I also held a savage 270 with iron sights and a wood stock last fall and I couldn't hardly believe that it was a savage.  The stock on that particular rifle looked great.  Their plastic stocks are still flimsey and ugly though.  As long as the group sizes are pretty, I'll keep buying them.

really don't see savage as ugly ! my taste sway toward mod 70's with out white line spacers  or 77's , the cooper looks good ! the browning is a well built gun but toooo shiny for my taste as is a wby !
i don't own a savage rifle but shoot a friends , thinking about getting one , if forced to make an analogy i would say the savage is much like the glock , looks don't matter cause they work well !
cheap ! hum ! its a word like ethics , it means different things to different people ! to a cooper shooter it would be a quality thing maybe , to and H&R shooter it might be a step up in quality thus not cheap , a Remington shooter it my be looks .
to me it looks like one of the most cost effective platforms to fire a bullet with confidence in hitting what you aim at !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

But they are still UGLY.
I can stand a little ugly when a 5 shot group measures.31 outside to outside at 100 yards and I can shoot the eyes out of groundhogs at 200 yards

Roy....you are right....you do need a better camera!!!

As far as cost for tac driving accuracy...I don't know if you can get better for less. Yeah, those plastic stocks are butt ugly but when you are shooting the eyes out of fly's at 100 yards...who cares?

I was not getting the best of groups with "heavier" bullets (150 grain or heavier)  from my Stevens 200 in .308. So, I bot some Davcon (the peanutbutter consistency kind) and bedded the action:

After I did that, my loads with Berger bullets (168 grain over Varget) got very tight at 100 yards and look like this:

The stock also "feels" much more solid after having the Davcon bedding job done. Still ugly....but ask me if I care!!!

that is a model 12 left hand stainless fluted barrel accu trigger 22-250. We took it out of the box mounted the scope set the trigger to a very  light setting  loaded  a few rounds to get to a max load of IMR 3031 behind a seirra 60 gr bullet. sighted it in and started shooting micro groups, and ruining groundhogs and coyotes days. It has the 13.5 to 27" harris bipods and a simmons 6.5x20x44 44mag scope If I can see a groundhog he is in danger!!
