S&W 500 Just an Observation\Comment
« on: September 14, 2007, 09:41:37 AM »
I was at our shooting club's Thursday evenings pin shoot and one of the guys brought his brand new S&W 500 with a fixed power Leupold scope mounted on it. We were shooting Bowling pins at 25 yards. He was shooting a "light load" (his words---not mine) with a 350 Hornady hollow point bullet. When he hit those pins, they cried for mercy. The backstop is granular fill that is mounded. This is the first time I've actually seen the pins travel any distance up that mound. :D

Well, this was the first time I've actually held one of these X-frame guns "up close and personal". With the scope on the gun, it was very well balanced and not the "monster" to hold on point that I kept suspecting it might be.

I will admit that I am a Smith fan, but I was quite surprised by the ease of handeling this big gun. Now, I havn't yet shot one....so maybe that will change my mind I dunno. But I shoot my Smith 44's with full boat loads and those will keep your attention (as you all well know), so with the larger frame I don't know how much more felt recoil the X-frame's have.

For my money, I seem to like the performance of the 460 Smith. Just something about a handgun that can flatline a bullet from zero to 250 yards that seems impressive. I can't do it now....too many other irons in the fire. But next year.....well, we shall see.

Nice gun youse guys have there.

Dave.

And then there are folks making 700 gr. bullets for that gun, YIKES!!  I guess if there is a general uprising and a guy needs an anti-tank weapon that'd fill the bill! :D

Yes the 500 Mag is a fun gun, that's why I own 2 of them.  ;D

I haven't shot a 500 X frame but have a 460 and must say I marvel at how well it manages the recoil. Judging from the concussion of the 460, I'm thinking the compensators (and grips) of the X frame do a marvelous job in that dept. Having said that, I gotta say that the 460 XVR manages to peg my fun meter pretty good so I don't think I'll be migrating to a 500 S&W in this lifetime.
