Question On .257s Vanguard or Roberts?
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:21:35 PM »
Hello,

I have been interested in a .257 Roberts.  It has come to my recent attention that Weatherby Vanguard has a .257.

I know little of these things, so hopefully y'all can help me out here...

Will these two rifles shoot the same shell?  Like if I went and got some Federal or other shells in the .257, will these shoot in either gun?

On a box of shells, does it differ and say Roberts or Weatherby Vanguard?

Are talking an exact identical caliber here?

If I were to get the Weatherby Vanguard, how hard are the shells to find and how much are they typically for a box of 20?

Thanks,

Snareman

Vanguard is a rifle line made under the Weatherby banner by Howa. Compare it to a Remington BDL or CDL. It's just a product line from Weatherby.

Don't confuse that with the various chamberings the rifle is offered in.

The .257 Roberts is a Cartridge just as is the .257 Weatherby. They both use bullets with a diameter of .257" but that's where all similarity ends. No they are NOT the same and NO you cannot use ammo for one in the other. To the best of my recollection the only .257 round the Vanguard is made for is the .257 Weatherby which is a belted round using basically the same case as the 7mm Weatherby but necked down. The .257 Roberts uses the same case as the old 7x57 Mauser and 6MM Remington. The case is NOT belted and is much smaller.

Hello Graybeard!

Thank you very much for your reply.  I thought it may be something like that, but wasn't certain of anything.  Thanks for your answer.  That enlightens me a bit more.

Snareman,

I don't have prices in front of me but weatherby ammo is typically big money, and not as common to find.  Whereas Bob is a little more reasonable to find.

Either way, you may want to consider reloading.

All ammo is costing a-lot these days...and for the 257 Weatherby mag...you can expect to pay $38 -$70 a box...depending on which bullet you choose...Which isn't a whole lot more than some of the other premium ammo out there...

Ok, thanks for the additional replies.  Yes, I'm starting to figure we're going beyond the normal $15-$20 for a box of 20 shells.  LOL!
