help my decide what to get
« on: June 08, 2003, 10:12:21 AM »
Well I have decided to order my self a 17 rem center fire full bull barrel.  Now the questions are:

1) do I get it for my Contender or my Encore?

2) how long of a barrel if going on a Contender?
    I am leaning to a 22" barrel, with a 12 inch forearm.

3) how long of a barrel if going on the encore?
    I am thinking 24"

4) how long of a forearm on the encore.
don't have any thoughts on this yet.

Any and all coments welcome on the above questions.

Oh, by the way I have a 26 hvy 223 rem now on the encore, and a 21 std taper 223 rem on the contender.

thanks

Lots of good information to work with there to try to give you some suggestions MD, except the most important thing... what your intended use for the new barrel will be.

Personally, I'd opt for the 17 Rem on the Contender, and go with a 19"-20" barrel.   Will balance better and be easier to use off hand in the field, yet with the right forend would still be excellent for bench, bags or bipod.   You wouldn't suffer any appreciable loss at all over a longer length - actually will shoot a little more precise with the shorter tube.

Forend length/width also depends on the use - I'd go no more than 12" and light to medium profile for offhand, longer and beefier if for shooting off bags/bipod.

FWIW, I own several Bullberry carbine barrels and all but one are 20".   They work very well either offhand or off bags/bipod depending on what forend I have installed.   The short folding calling rig (6X47) wears an 18" light sporter profile.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Additional information:

what your intended use for the new barrel will be.

shooting p-dogs & bench rest shooting of paper.

Forend length/width also depends on the use - I'd go no more than 12" and light to medium profile for offhand, longer and beefier if for shooting off bags/bipod.

I am thinking a 12" forearm, 2 1/4" wide flat bottom with finger grooves.

I am planing on having Vigin Valley Custom Guns do the work for the barrel and the forearm.  I am also planing on having the re-work the trigger down to 1 1/2 lbs.  I am going to put a 6x24x44 trarget dot scope on it but havn't decided which brand yet, still searching out info.

The action to both the Encore and the contender are blued, and I don't know if I want a blued or ss barrel, leaning to going blue rather than mix and match.

Hay thanks for the reply.  Plan on placing the order this week.  Any other suggestions and coments welcome.

Thansk again :P
