.308 brass necked down for .243

    I'm not sure if i posted this before it's been a long time since I ran them through the die.
 this spring I picked up some .308 brass from the range took it home ran it through the full length .243 sizer  from the resizing this leaves the necks  very thick, they will not eject/extract from the chamber,I've tried chucking them in the lee cartridge holder that you use for trimming and running a fine file accross the neck,which works,but is very slow and frustrating  >:(...so long story short if you're looking to do this be prepared to spend more time than it's worth or invest in a neck turning tool.
   The neck turning tool will cost about what 200 empty cartridges would cost,which would last me quite a while in a single shot handi-rifle.
   Although it's good to know how to do, if brass ever get's scarce. I think for now I'll just buy new stuff!

Ummm, I'd just buy 243 brass, it's not like it's in short supply or expensive. ;)

well there is plenty of good 243 brass out there so i wouldn't do it but you could just run it through 260 die first then a 243 an turn the necks and your brass would work just fine

Whenever you neck down a casing, the neck thickness increases.  ...Vice-versa for necking up a casing.

If you are going ot continue to use the 308 brass for 243's, get yourself a neckturner.

Tim gave it to ya straight... Just buy new brass.

 Maybe sell the 308 and pay for part of the 243's...

I started to fool with that idea shortly before I sold my 243, the main reason was dirt cheap 10c/lb range pickup brass. Lost it's appeal once I figured on the steps. at least 2 trips into  a sizing die 308 then 243 (though a 7-08 die would have helped) then the neck turning. Even if the brass is free it is hardly worth the work.

Thanks for saving me the time. I also have quite a few .308 rounds That I re-sized to .243. Guess I'll put them in my scrap pile.  TVC15

7mm08 to .243 will most likely work good, I have done it with no probems.  I would guess that 308 to 7mm08 would also work.  Looks like 308 to 243 is a little much.  Larry

Problem is yer going the wrong direction. Bigger is always better go out to .338 or .358 etc. LOL :D
