Poll - Pick your favorite Wisconsin Deer Gun
« on: September 09, 2007, 01:14:00 PM »
Dear All,
It is getting to be that time of year when I can think about much other than Deer season.  I thought it would be interesting to put together a poll on Wisconsin Deer guns.  Please pick your ideal Wisconsin deer caliber.  I know many of you use several, as do I but I am making you pick just one (I know an awful thought).  I didn't include EVERY caliber, and that I combined some.  I apologize and no offense was intended if I didn't give your caliber all the notoriety it deserves.  Please feel free to tell us all what ever you like about your rig, camp, traditions etc.

ONE OTHER THING, PLEASE MAKE THE FIRST WORD OF YOUR RESPONSE EITHER NORTH OR SOUTH INDICATING IF YOU HUNT NORTH OR SOUTH OF GREENBAYS LATITUDE.  ALSO, IF YOU FEEL SO INCLINED TELL US WHAT COUNTY YOU HUNT IN.

Best of luck to you all in your fall hunting endeavors.

NORTH

I hunt in Vilas.  My prefered rig is a Ruger Ultra Light in 308 with a 20" bbl.  I have a 1.5x5 Leopold on it.

North area. I hunt several counties in the north west part. I have been getting away from magnums and have settled on the 308 for many reasons. I will also try my new 6.8 SPC in an AR15 platform, I also have a new Encore in 308 and will otherwise use my M1A.

I voted for the 30-30. actually mines a marlin but is nice and light and compact. I live and hunt in Illinois most of the time with a remington 11-87. Great slug gun but very heavy. I look forward to going to Wisconsin for a long weekend after Thanksgiving so I can take that lever gun into the woods. Mostly I hunt on public land where there aren't that many chances at a long shot so the carbine does fine for me. If I were to go where the shots were longer I would take my 742 in 30-06. Nice gun also but kicks like a mule.

If the poll would let me I would vote for more than one as I use more than one. In the last few years I have killed 4 deer with my 308 Encore Pistol. One fell to my 6.5 Swede and One to my 30/30 Winchester 94. One to my 45/70 Remington Rolling Block which I do not use much as it is in a buffalo rifle configuration and weighs 12 pounds. I would not mind shooting one with my K31 either and may try it with a cast load I have worked up.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Slightly north.
Chose "Other " :::   8mm Mauser for me. Perfect for where I hunt. Usually close range but occasionally 200 yds. I get same ballistics as .30-06 with a 196gr bullet....can't beat that, IMO.

I use a Parker-Hale 25-06 with a 4x12x40 mounted on it.  All I do are neck shots with it and they don't get back up.  Longest shot I had with it was last year 425 yards. Also use a Parker-Hale 308. I hunt on private land in Clark County

wow I am pretty amazed that we only have one 30-06 so far, and no 7mm-08's.  Seems like everybody and their brother on graybeard are 7MM08 fans.  Again sorry if I didn't include your caliber, I definitely should have thought of the 8MM.  I added 6.5  and the 45-70.

Additional info about wi deer gun, in our deer camp, one in BAR 270 WIN., one in Savage bolt action .30-06, one in Rem 742 .30-06. and Rem 7400 in .30-06. So far I think Remington autoloader (742, 7400, and 4)  is most popular use for deer hunting in Northwoods.

Hunt in Shotgun country with NEF Tracker II in 20 ga scoped with a Leupy 1.5-5x20mm. Where I can rifle hunt, I use a H&R Topper in 30-30 Win scoped with another Leupy 1.5-5x20mm.

Really like the topper as it is just around 6 lbs. with scope and still has 22" barrel. Tracker II is under 6lbs. with scope

Section 41, don't have my favorite it's a .444 in a Winchester Timber Carbine so I voted for my carry gun (walk'n about gun, have harvested 13 whitetail with it over the years though) a .44 Mag in a Winchester Trapper

I'm a big 308 fan but this year I have my fairly recently aquired 284 win sighted in & ready to go. I mostly hunt in the northern U.P. since I grew up there. I make it a time or 2 in WI,M-L if nothing else.

30-30 or traditional muzzleloader. Just about on the line in Clark Co. or else up in Iron Co.

My 30-30 lever gun got a nice 9 pointer in waushara county on the last day, ten minutes in the woods. Good sized deer but small rack.

Must be closed, couldn't vote. For my hunting up north (Marinette County) I prefer in this order; '94 Timber Carbine chambered for .444, My '94 Win Black Shadow chambered for .444 (When I am sitting in one particular stand since it is my only rifle with a scope), and my '94 Trapper chambered for .44 Mag for tramping around the woods with. Down in Northern Walworth and western Waukesha I use my .44 Mag 7 1/2" Ruger BlackHawk or my .50 cal Lyman GPH percussion.

Those are my preferences, but I also occasionally carry one of my '94 Wins in .30-30 or one of my original Springfield Trapdoors (.45-70)

Hunt in Clark county.  Use either my Parker-Hale 25-06 or 308.  Both of these rifles have killed quite a few deer.

I'll probably be using the trusty old 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mouser this year.

So here's to the next 117 or so years with that cartridge. :D

No matter how we shake the dice, both calibers will probably work just fine for our purposes. Of course, if we're talking about busting some brush back in the swamp, you might be dressing your Buck while I'm still off chasing mine. ;)

I hunt mostly in Wood county with my favorite Remington Auto 280 with a 3x9 leupy.  It gets rather heavy on drives though, so this year I bought a Browning BLR in 308 topping it off with a Vortex Diamondback 2x7 with BDC Recticle - a real lightweight, quick, accurate rig.
