170 gr. FP in 308 Win
« on: June 08, 2003, 07:11:29 AM »
I took a chance the other day on trying a 170 gr. Hornady FP in my 308 Win because of an article I'd read saying it gave good accuracy.  The best group I shot was .75" with the average hovering around 1.25".  They were actually the best groups that I've ever gotten out of my rifle.  My question is whether this bullet will be a good hunting bullet in my 308.  I know it's meant for a 30-30 so I'm wondering if pushing to around 2600 fps will be too fast.  Will the extra velocity make it blow up on deer or is this something that I shouldn't worry about?

JPuke,
That is also the same bullet that most folks who are loading the 307 winchester use for the velocities that you are looking at in your 308.  My Dad used those bullets(or remingtons just like it) in his 06 for NY state whitetails for many years when I was a child, his reasons were sound; it was extremely accurate out to 150 or so yards and stopped deer in their tracks with the 35-125 yard shots afforded.  I think that you are on good ground with that bullet.

170 grain bullets

jpuke:  I tried the same thing with a 308 I had a number of years ago and the bullet was very accurate.  I used 180 grain loading data and got excellent groups.  I took two whitetail in upstate NY with that load - one dropped in his tracks and the second walked a half circle and then dropped.  That bullet has always worked extremely well in the 30-30 and is one of the reasons the 30-30 remains so popular today.  You are just doing a better job with that bullet loaded into your 308s.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.
