The 458 Lott shoots the 550 bullets
« on: September 09, 2007, 05:15:43 AM »
With my CZ American Safari 458 Lott I shot the 550 bullets to 2210fps with 84 FT LBs of recoil and no signs of pressure, primer hole normal , Extraction normal, case normal. What do you think? Thats a lot of recoil but it wasn't bad with my CZ held tight. Rifle is 10 lbs.

I just got some more power from in town to continue my light load high speed experiments with the .458 lott.  I might try and load some large loads at lower speeds (lower than max) to try and make a good heavy penetrating load that wont cause too much hydrashock on the game I am shooting with it.

corbanzo,
What do you plan on shooting with your light loads and how fast do they go?

They are just for fun, not for hunting.  I'm trying to break 3000fps.  I have had them up to about 2800fps with a 300grn JHP at max 89 grns of H335.  Just made up some new test loads using H335 and H4198... I'm above max, so I'm not going to post my loads... but once I get them chronographed I will let you know the velocities.  Haven't seen any pressure signs... yet.

Try the 250gr barnes HP designed for the 45/70.  I bet you can really get them screaming out of your lott.  I just started loading up some 350gr speers to use in my upcoming lott.  Should get it back in a few weeks.

Hadn't seen those... guess I'll have to give them a try.  Those solids might even hold together out of that at that speed... maybe.

corbanzo, I shot my Lott with 500 RNSP nose bullets threw a 6" piece of OAK at 50 yds.  It made a hole all the way threw, I could stick my finger in the exit hole.

I use the hornady RNSP 500's to fall a 8" srpuce tree in 5 shots.  Heck of a load.

Find a starting load for a 460WBY and I'll try them out.

kdmcustom, I don't need to shoot a bullet of that weight for shooting elephant my 500 solids will do just fine. It might be a challenge to shoot one. I would think this would recoil quite hard in ft lbs.

Yeah, the 500 grainers do pretty good in my .458.  I see no need for a 720 grainer.  It can push as 500 grainer plenty fast to knock down anything on this earth... welll... maybe I'll bring something different when I'm blue whale hunting....
