hey i am 15 and was wondering about if i could get a .300 win. mag yall say it dont kick that hard i currently have a .270 win and a 20 gauge if i wanted to know how hard it kicked could i buy some shells for my 20 gauge that would be about the same as the .300 ? well ttyl

For the record, I don't think that Cheaper than Dirt dot Com has prices that truly are "cheaper than dirt." I have found much better prices on the net.

As for the .300 Win. Mag. I agree that you probably don't need a .300 Win. Mag. and that your .270 (if not subject to a recall) can do 75% of what a .300 Win. Mag will do (don't hold me to this percentage).

The best thing to do is use a friend's .300 Win. Mag and give it a try. If you can handle it, and the hunting that you use REQUIRES it, then by all means get it.

Why are you thinking about a .300 Win. Mag?
What animals do you hunt?

Craig, I've bought a lot of magnum rifles. I still have everyone of them. 7mm mag, 7stw, 30-378 just to name a few. But you know what I take out of the safe when I go hunting? 7-08, which is a 308 hull sized down to a 7mm. It's a slightly larger bullet 140 gr than the 270 bullet 130gr. Now you can get different weight bullets for both but this is about the average used in each. The 270 has more powder so they are close. The 270 will kill any animal in the Lower USA. I do like having and shooting the bigger rifles but they are not really needed. I know where you are coming from wanting to know everything about these guns so just keep asking. We'll help you with any question you have.

i dont really need one i guess but i like big guns i mostly hunt deer,hogs mostly hogs all year i just was thinking that i would really like to have one and the only guns my dad has is a 6.5/55 a smith and wesson 9mm a .22 rifle a .22 pistol and a 20 gauge i was just thinking about the .300 would be cool to halve i dont really need it i just really want it for hogs and deer and i want to start reloaing my shells i went and shot my .270 and i can shoot 1 inch groups at 75 yds. the only thing wrong with it so far is the stupid clip but my unlce broke it trying to get it out of the holder thing he didnt know to push the button lol but anyways mine was before they had the defect thing,oh if i put a muzzle brake on it how much would the .300 win. mag kick the other post said like a .243 if thats all that would be no problem i never wear plugs though i found shells up at wal-mart for 10 bucks for my .270 and about 23 for the .300 mag. well ttyl

I have a muzzle brake on my Remington Sendero SF in .300 Win. Mag. The gun does kick less than a 270, but I wouldn't say that it kicks like a .243. BTW, you should ALWAYS wear hearing protection at the shooting range, especially when you shoot a gun with a muzzle brake, and it would be a good idea to use hearing protection when hunting with it too.

As for hogs, they are tough critters and I understand your wanting, or thinking that you want, a .300 Win. Mag. But believe me, you would be better off with a .30-06 with stout 180 grain bullets like Barnes X. I use a PMC 165 Barnes X in my .30-06 and have killed quite a few hogs with it (not to mention quite a few deer with it too.) It is the perfect combo deer/hog gun in my opinion.

i know i dont NEED it my dad probably wont let me buy it bit it is fun to think about how much does it cost to get started reloading shells i would probably only load for my .270 and a .223 i shoot remington corelokt to

Craig - I deer hunted with, and handloaded for, a Rem700 in 300WinMag for about 8years. I can tell you that the recoil of a 300WM is SIGNIFICANTLY more than a 270 or 20g!! Hotter handloads were downright painful after half a dozen shots in a t-shirt. The most accurate load I'd found for it was a 180gr Hornady SP at about 2850fps (hot 30-06 range) and it still kicked too much to be "fun" at the range. A 30-06 nearing that velocity would kick less because it takes less powder to get it done = less recoil.

It was a very accurate gun (sub-MOA consistently) but I ended up ditching it here on GB's and bought a lighter weight and lighter recoiling Rem Mountain rifle in 7mm-08. I don't miss the big boomer one bit!! Like others above have said, your 270 will do just fine, and if you want something bigger look at a 30-06. It will come very close to a 300WM without all of the fuss and flash (ie. recoil and muzzle blast!). But I'll bet that if you get into handloading, you can come up with a load using 150gr bullets in that 270 that will put a serious hurting on anything you care to hunt in the lower 48.

I too have a 7mm-08 and absolutely love it. I have a Remington BDL SS DM with a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x-14x-50mm Illuminated scope. I shoot Hornady 139 grain interlock Light Magnum loads. Even though these are light magnums, the recoil is still quite light and the accuracy is about an inch or less at 100 yards. The 7mm-08 has to be one of the best choices for whitetails under 250 yards. :grin:

I too had a 300 Mag for a short period of time. To uncomfortable to shoot much for me at the time. Sold it and got a 7mm.

If you are hooked on buying a 300mag, why not a 300 WSM instead. Equal in performance with over the shelf ammo to the 300 winmag and less recoil. I have several friends that have these and like them.

Now me, when I had my middle age crisis, I went and bought me a Savage 16LZ chambered for the Lazzeroni 308 Patriot. This one I really like, but can't afford to shoot too much paper, just shoot at meat with this one.

I agree with the other guys. Keep that 270 and use the money to buy your girlfriend a gift.

Zachary - I'm also shooting the Hornady Light Magnums in my 7mm-08! I've found the 139SP to be wonderfully accurate for a factory load from a stock gun .... I've gotten groups down to 0.58" and they typically run in the 0.7" range. I haven't started reloading for it yet, but I hope to be able to at least duplicate this kind of accuracy ... beating it will be tough!!!

My Mountain rifle is the LSS (Laminated/Stainless) with a 3-9x40 Nikon Monarch on it. Love it!! :grin:

AKA ,Since you like big guns dont stop with a 300magnum go to a 338-06
then you can really see what a gun like that does to hogs. :lol:
