Rugger # 1 .375 hand loads
« on: September 05, 2007, 06:07:27 AM »
Well I got a new scope mounted and sighted in on my new Rugger #1.  At this time all I know is the rugger #1 will stack 270gr sp  factory Rem rounds on top of each other at 100yds.  I was very pleased. Now that I have some brass and have ordered dies I would like to get a nice light load with minimal recoil but good groupings. Any suggestions?

If your talking about a .375 H&H, then get some AA5744, {accurate arms}, or some H4227. With 220g class bullets you bullets you will find an accurate load between 2000-2300fps. Makes for cheap, low noise, low recoil, North American Non Dangerous Game medicine. Hornady Flat Points are good, some good LBT hardcasts are even better, preferably in the LFN nose profile and with GasChecks.

Swampthing correct on the H&H. Thanks for the advise. Sounds like what I am looking for. We do not run into much dangerous game in Ohio. Hate to have such a nice piece collecting dust.

The load I use for most North American game is 68grs H-4895 with a Hornady 225gr Spire point for 2680 fps in my rifle. Low pressures and plenty of punch and it groups below an inch at 100 yrd. I sight just over an inch high @ 100 and it's dead on at 200.

I asked the same questions on another forum, and got this reply (72 grains of IMR-4064 for a 270 grain Hornady Spire Point).  I got .92 inch groups at 100 yards in a Remington 700 XCR.  I shot a whitetail last fall with the load.  Yep, it died.  Good Luck.
