a great labor day
« on: September 04, 2007, 12:47:56 AM »
Buddy called and wanted Al and I to kill a couple small hogs. We got there and he asked if wed kill a couple buffalo for him. he needed meat for a safari club banquete. I took the first with my new 475 marlin 94 took a head shot and down it went load was a 360 wfn at about 1500 fps. A little later Al took a second one with his 45/65 lever gun. It too dropped in its tracks. Load was a 300 rcbs rfgc at about 1200 fps. The pig hunting was a bust. the pigs were wild as hell and holed up in the heat and the only ones we saw were trophy hogs that he really didnt want us to blast. We were about to go and i made a deal with Dave for a cow for myself for meat. I didnt really pack guns for buffalo hunting and had my little 4 5/8s super loaded with devestator hps cast out of a 5050 mix of #2 and pure. About new it would work fine on small hogs but was a little leary about a 800 lb cow buffalo. Figured what the hell as i really wanted to test that bullet. Found a cow that went about 700lbs and took a broad side shot at about 50 yards or so. Hit it behind the front shoulder and it took off trotting like it wasnt hit. If youve never killed buffalo thats the way they react to about any hit there even by a 500 linebaugh. It went about 50 yards staggered and piled up. The bullet took out the top of the pipes to the heart and did quite a bit of damage. what was really impressive and what i would have never dreamed would happen was the one inch exit hole on the far side. That hollow point gave complete penetration on a 700 lb amimal. Im here to tell you i doubt if any jacketed hp would have done the same. What a way to spend labor day. Killing buffalo with a couple good friends!

I had to cook and eat elk someone else killed ... no shooting... talked about shooting....

great test of caliber and bullet, and a new gun at that ... I don't get no better'n that on any holiday...
about what were you pushing that devestator cast bullet in that lil' old gun there mr. Smale ?
I have heard that slower is better for penetration... that is some penetration... !!
Now you realize that all your big guns are no longer necessary, of course... want to sell one of them 500L's ?  LOL
glad you got to use the lever gun as well, obviously you found a screw and worked out the little thing with the Mag tube, was it..?  that is a fine thought as well...
more info for the needy folks that did not shoot this holiday.... I know there are more than just the three of us mere mortals who want to know more... that should be a great example for you to cite to beginners thinking that they have to have the biggest fastest for big game... ( like my questions have been in the past.)
I am glad you had that day .. a great memory to make ..that is for sure..

the devestator was going about 1200 out of the little super. Faster then i would have idealy wanted but i had it loaded for small hogs. If I would have known buffalo were on the agenda when i left home i would have proably grabbed a bigger gun or at least a differnt bullet and load for that one. I was nervous using that cast hp on something that big. Like i said though it did surprise me and worked surpisingly well.  I sure wouldnt be afraid to do it again. It will never replace a good keith or lfn for me but it would sure make a great whitetail bullet.
