Model 58 value?

A friend of mine has a near 100% S&W 58 .41 mag that he is looking to sell. Just trying to figure out a fair price for it.

I would guess in the 800 dollar range. I just sold a shooter last year for 500.

"WOW".... They sure don't bring that kind of money in my neck of the woods. I recently passed on a Nice Nickel model that had a 4" Barrel. I had bought Three others at the show I was at, and regret not buying the Model 58 as the seller was wanting $425.00 for it. He had no box or paperwork with it, and it needed a extractor change out as the original one looked like the Nickel was rubbed off and it made the rest of the gun Look bad. This one was in great shape and they typically go for around the $500.00 Mark in my area. They seem to draw about the same money or a Little less than a model 57 which has adjustable sights. Myself I like the model 57 better and have one in 4" Nickel but if I had not bought the Other Three that day I would have added this 4" Nickel model offered. I will Not Part with my model 57 4" nickel revolver as they are way to hard to find these days. Most model 27's I see either have a 6" tube or the Walking cane model of 8-3/8".  Regards, Hammerdown

I 58 is typically worth about 200 bucks more then any 57. The collector interest in them has really skyrocketed in the last couple years.

I am seeing the difference in prices and it seems to be a geographical thing with this Model. In my area most Prefer an adjustable sighted revolver so the model 57 is in the lead for Price at the Moment.I see the same thing going on with model 27's & 28's. The 28's are Hot in demand right now so they at most times bring more than the model 27's but I have seen that change as well. A smart Buyer will buy the more elaborate models and sit on them to flip later when the demand is for them is strong again. I had a Stainless model 681 awhile ago that a Pawn shop could not give away due to it's fixed sights most buyers were not Interested. I purchased it due to it's price of $275.00 out the door. The 681 is an L Frame six shot .357 and this One happened to be an early one. I swapped it for a mdel 19 in Nickel with a 4" Barrel and the buyer added some boot to the sale. It was Not sold in my area as I had to ship it out West, showing me that the fixed sighted models are bringing more in other Locations. I would have bought that model 58 I saw at the last show as a good profit from Flipping it could have been made but Buying Three at one show left me gun Poor.Regards, Hammerdown

I just kick myself for letting go my 58 back in the early 1980's so I could have the adjustable sights of a 57.
Now I wish they'd make a limited run of the 58 in stainless.

Real good looking gun. I've also got the original owner's manual. The serial number is of the "S" prefix, which for some reason is sought after (Anyone know why?)

Hello
The "S" prefix before the serial number tells yours was made between 1964-1969 Era. They started the N Prefix after 1969 that so it leaves your in a short window for collectors being only a Five Year span using the S prefix. Nice Looking revolver, and if those grips are original to it they should be stamped on the right Panel with the guns serial number and seeing the diamond missing they came after 1968 time frame as that is when S&W stopped making the diamond center grips. One odd is, I noticed is that they are not the P.C. style grips. Most model 58's came with the scalloped edge P.C. Style grips back then and Perhaps they are not original ? If the right panel has the guns serial number, it had to have been ordered with those style grips, and I would be willing to bet it was one of the last to get the S Prefix before they changed over  to the N Prefix in 1969.  I've seen two for sale this year. One was almost like new, asking price was $500, not much interest generated at the gunshow.  The other was actually NIB, it sold for $700.  You have to find someone that appreciates fixed sight revolvers, plus someone that fully understands what the 58 represents.  I would have bought either at the prices asked if I'd had the money available.

"S" denotes the very first so many (few thousand) in the serial number range or model, doesn't it?
